going racing

we drove this rig from maine to SC. 24hrs!! 60mph unless up hill, then 40.
I was worried that truck was going to break down but the engine ran great.
7mpg, $500 in gas. we have about $1k in the truck, flying up there and drive back, the trailer was free and the car was free. I will have perhaps $1k in the car to get it on the track. includes fire suit and some parts.
took it to the track this past weekend to get it inspected to see if I could even run it since it is so old. built in 86, body is too old according to rules and some other things are illegal for the class I will run. it has a built engine and rack and pinion, bigger brakes. but I got 8 free tires this week end too.
getting the things I need to support the car is costing $$ right now. I need scales. I have no idea what the car weighs or what the distribution is.

plan is to take it up Wednesday for its first day out in over 10yrs. just want to run it slow and get it hot and check it out. I also need time to get use to the car and learn to drive since I have never raced. I can practice 4 days a week. I also have 2 other tracks within 2hrs and I was told I can practice at one of the others during the week too. not sure if I want to race at that one, the cars are much more beat up there and waaaay fewer teeth among the racers. :D
the seat does not fit me right, very narrow in the shoulders. in fact I have bruise on my arm from it just from driving in the yard. the seat pins my elbows down to my side and makes it hard for me to steer it.
will see how it goes Wednesday. a seat may be on order. found a kirkey for around 500

engine does not seem smooth to me. going to pull plugs and do a compression test since I have run it now. I started to do one before I started it (had not been started in 10yrs). I got 180 on the first one and 120 on the second, so I stopped since it had not been run in so long.
oh, it has no alternator and no rev limiter. I bought an MSD for the rev limiter but I will have to add weight to run it. but then that will put a bigger drain on the battery.
need to figure out a rev limiter.

I have a very good Chinese friend. Yes I am married.
It’s fun to experience new things with her since she has only been here about 10yrs and there are so many American things she has never seen
So I put her in the car yesterday and started it up. OMG the expression on her face was priceless
She has never seen a race car so she had lots of questions like how do you open the door.

You can see the seat and how the shoulder area is very narrow.

Did a quick search on the PO. He seems like an interesting guy to meet.
Did the truck come with the deal?
(His wife's name is on the door.) She passed away at only 63 7 years ago. Sad...
Congrats on the car and hope that it turns out to be a fun hobby.

russ nutting is my father in law.
he built the car. he use to build a lot years ago, he is 83 now and still races.
im leaving his name on it.

I got to spend a lot of time with him when I went up to get the car. something I usually don't do when I am there. AMAZING amount of racing knowledge that man has. been doing it all his life and that is ALL he does. that's why its kind of hard for me to talk to him, I know so little compared to him. also I am deaf and he mumbles.
the first time I met him is when I got married. he did not even stop working in a race car to come meet the guy that was marrying his daughter.

he is amazing, if there is something he needs, he makes it.
he is very simple when it comes to car setup,
I have been reading trying to learn about suspension setups for these cars.
so I ask questions like,
do you run split caster, "nope"
how about rear stagger, "nope"
why no rear stagger. " think about it, going down the straight the tires are working against each other" (found out he runs open rear diff)
what about rear steer "nope, (some smart reply like) do you really want the rear end moving around"
what about anti dive. "nope, just binds up front end so it doesn't move"
so you keep it pretty simple then. "yep"

he wins a lot, even against the young hi dollar teams.
I hear him mumble about these guys wasting all their money on those expensive gadgets!!

he came from a time when he did not have much money. in fact his racing put food on the table.

I found out his wife also raced. she won the powder puff championship quite a few times.
