need rev limter for chevy 350
just got an old late model race car built back around 86.
the engine has to at least be that old. it does NOT have a rev limiter on it right now but I would like to have one since I am new to racing and don't want to have to focus on RPM right now. been looking for a rotor style rev limiter like is available for Porsche but I don't know much about American engines and was hoping someone could help with finding something. I bought an MSD to put in but it does not have an alternator and I don't want to put the extra load on the battery plus I don't think a battery alone would run the MSD properly. |
You didn't say what type of race car......drag racer, dirt stock, ETC. In most cases over revving is caused by a missed shift or down shifting too early so a rev limiter won't help. If it were me I'd call the tech guys at Summit Racing as they seem to know everything about American engines and such. If the engine is that old, maybe a weekend rebuild is in order first?

By 1986 most American iron had a computer controlled carb or fuel injection. My 86 El Camino had the Rochester controlled carb that was a POS, but it had a built in rev limiter but I never ever hit it. I finally took it off and replaced it with a throttle body fuel injection system like Chevy used on the 6 cylinder engines. Back then there were no kits on the market to convert to FI. Now there are tons of them. They all have the rev limit set with a computer control.
I presume you want to go with an old school carb for a race car for cheap and easy performance. If FI is allowed in your style of race you might check out one of the performance FI kits on the market. I would assume the racers know of some easy way to get a rev limit in there on a old school carb basic engine. The good news is parts are crazy cheap for street parts. Race parts are likely have the same markup as Porsche parts. |
We can't really advise on what you can use without knowing what kind of ignition system it's running?

By chance if it is running a OE style HEI distrubutor there are a few companies that make a replacement ignition module that have adjustable built in 'pots' for RPM limiter. Easy way to go with this. Set it, re-install cap and you're done.
MSD sells a stand- alone distributor that has the same feature W/O an external 'box' for under $300 - I believe. Only other option is an external control box which typically has multiple spark function at lower RPM's but does draw a fair amount of amps to operate. |
I had a Pertronix rev limiter on my 912. You might take a look at their web site (assuming they have one) to see if they have something that would work for a V-8. It was adjustable too.

oh, it has a accel style 37 dist. in it with dual points.
I kind of want one just for protection. the tach is currently mounted down low, im learning to drive the car, I also have to figure out the gear for the track. |
I'm almost certain that there is no 'control box' for RPM limiting that interfaces with a points style distributor.
|
i was hoping there was a rotor type rev limiter.
learning more about this old dual points distributor . pretty cool. |
I remember something like that available as a rotor for GM & Ford applications a looooong time ago but was not very accurate.
Really the valve springs were the rev limiter then ..... |
Summit or Jegs both should be able to meet your needs.
