chain races- skid plate races
anyone ever heard of these? if you haven't seen them, GO!!
we drove 4 hrs up to Winston salem to bowman gray stadium, what an amazing place. more on it later. chain races are 2 cars chained together. the front car has an engine but NO brakes. the back car has no engine but HAS the brakes. 2 drivers of course. skid races are FWD cars with steel plates welded to the bare rims of the rear tires. need I say more about handling characteristics. its like the rear of the car is on ICE!! there are no cautions. everyone runs until laps are complete or time limit. needless to say this rednecks at their finest. (I can say that because I am one). as a kind of snobby female friend said to me one time, "it sure looks like rednecks have more fun" in a very envious tone. bowman gray- .25 mile flat track. seats 17k and standing room for another 2k. Daytona has NOTHING compared to this place. I bet there were 15k people there!!! the fans were incredible. they really got into the racing. if there was a driver they did not like they let that driver know it. my wife read something that said NASCAR should distance itself from bowman gray because of all the fights and things that go on. with that kind of turnout BG isn't changing ANYTHING. I bet there are only about 200 people at the myrtle beach speedway, same for Dillon speedway. you really need to experience this place if you can.

How much moonshine and meth does one have to ingest to come up with this?

Fifty years ago Figure 8 races were the rage, as well as chain races. Even saw a Figure 8 Chain Race once in El Cajon. Or even a Chain Race Demolition Derby. It's all been done. Cars from the 60's were a little more stout back in the day, and they only cost about $25 at the local junk yard...and you could sell them back on Sunday.

Did you drive 4 hours to a bullring to watch chain racing? Because that is crazy! I mean dedication!

Could someone explain this? These guys are racing without the chains, but still can't seem to keep the cars straight. It's not demolition derby, exactly, more like a combo of NASCAR and Keystone Cops. To me, it looks like they had the victory party before the race! :-0

Looks like a typical night at a local bullring. That is some of the best racing for spectators, IMHO. That must be an upscale track, what with having pavement and all.

At the end of the day, grass roots racing like this will draw a huge crowd if it's entertaining. It's silly, ridiculous but fun. Fans usually want to see the crashes as much as the 'racing'.

what great experience seeing that track and the people. I think the big draw is the track is short, flat, you can see the entire tack very good and the guys know how to race there. there is a LOT of contact. there are also fights and lots of tempers. one race a girl won it. second place was just lightly tapping her rear almost every lap, not enough to wreck her but enough to get her out of shape. the races were close and bunched up. even the mini stock races were good because everyone ran close. we go to the track here, .5mile. once they get strung out its not too interesting im sure there is lots of video of that place on youtube
