You grew up in one of them there stuffy Oxford type homes, didn't you?

Criteria?? Graduation?? You mean needylist and endytime, right?

"Graduation" specifically means the celebratory end of a period of education. Why keep telling kids that they are "ending" some period of time, which implies that each period of education is independent of each other period of education. In fact, education is a continuous flowing stream from birth to death. So, instead of creating these artificial dams called "graduation", you should talk about the culmination of education to that point in time, which doens't compartmentalize your educational life.

Kindergarten graduation last week here. I just shook my head and had another piece of cake.

But the curriculum and expectations put on these 5yos! Back in 1979 I think the "curriculum" was "don't eat your boogers and keep your hands to yourself".

And we use "rubric" all of the time when discussing various scoring schemes for the vulnerability assessments that we do. They're rigid sets of criteria that allow numerous people to (hopefully) get the same scores for a given scenario.

And even though we now call that ceremony when you finish school "culmination," we also still call the evening class celebration "grad night."

I always thought if a person was to use that word it would be in the context of an apocalyptic adventure culminating in a cacophony of sounds from that blasted contraption!

But thats just me...

Hex is OK for visual representation, but binary is where it is at

Limited application to other fields? Or in use but by a different name - like "specification for bid" or "punch list" or ....

Anyway, for education, I find them quite useful as both a teacher and a student.

As a teacher, I have a quick checklist to run down for projects, which lets me get grading done not only quick, but much more objectively. Should a grade get challenged, the rubric, the choice I made on it, and the definition of what is required for each level of the outcome is there for me, my chair, or the provost to examine. When I'm done checking stuff on the rubric, I have a score. In theory, anyone else grading the same paper using the same rubric should come up with a near exact match to my score. And only "near" because some of it is still very subjective.

As a student, I like it, especially since it details exactly what I have to do to earn an A on a project or paper. Rubrics used for grading and made available to the student BEFORE submission time increases the quality of student submissions, and helped me do a 4.0 for my bs degree (the AS feeder I did 15 years ago not so much...)

Isn't there some old rubric that states that one consult the dictionary, such action culminating in knowledge that a word is often misused or carries with it some colloquial connotation in opposition to societal norms?

...or something like that :-)

Merriam Webster Dictionary:

(1) the title of a statute
(2) : something under which a thing is classed : CATEGORY
the sensations falling under the general rubric, "pressure"
— F. A. Geldard
c : an explanatory or introductory commentary : GLOSS
specifically : an editorial interpolation
2 : a heading of a part of a book or manuscript done or underlined in a color (such as red) different from the rest
3 : an established rule, tradition, or custom

Remember when you were young, and your brain was like a sponge? Then later you started to really understand all that you had learned, and you really started to grasp the concepts behind simple definitions. After a while, you started to create your own understanding of the world, and the future seemed limitless. Nothing seemed impossible, and knowledge seemed to go on forever...

Then comes the fourth stage of learning where a man decides he knows everything he needs to know, also known as ''Get the hell off my lawn.''.

There is a certain metric to the entomology of the new lingo, best not to parse it's finer meanings and soporifically get along.
