HUGE shout out to the Ozark Mountain Region
 

Long story short our ‘82SC broke down on a back country road outside of Bentonville last Sunday afternoon. My wife and I were headed back home to Kansas City after a nice long weekend in Fayetteville, away from all the storms we’ve been getting. After spending over an hour texting with my KC mechanic we narrowed down the issue to either the fuel pump or CDI. While on the phone with Hagerty to get tow quotes (110 miles outside our 100 limit) of OVER 1000.00 :eek: a gentleman (David) pulls up (the ONLY ONE to stop and that after being passed by by 3 cops!) and informs me he’s a multiple P-car owner and very active in the Ozark Mountain PCA club. He gave me his mechanics (Eric Vinning) cell # and we set up a tow to his shop, Ozark Import Specialists. David even offered to garage the car if Eric couldn’t get it in. Mind you, this is all happening Sunday, mid-afternoon, on a major holiday weekend. I just picked up the car as I’m posting this, new CDI and coil, as a huge THANK YOU to these guys! Also, Eric and his shop have been longtime sponsors of Porsche Palooza held the 2nd weekend of each November in Eureka Springs, AR. If you haven’t been, you need to go. I’ve been the last 4-5 years and it’s a blast! By and large, this P-car community is second to none! Thanks again guys!

I always keep a list of region presidents of the PCA regions handy for my road trips. I have been lucky and never need to call one.

We have some stories of travelers getting help and blown away by the friendless and enthusiasm of club members. PCA motto is “it is not the cars, it’s the people”.

I'd encourage anyone who travels with an older 911 to carry a spare CDI box with them, or replace their original CDI box with a modern equivalent. The original boxes are pretty basic and not all that well made and they fail more often than you'd like.

Might want to give that spacesaver spare tire a little thought, too.

We lived in Arkansas for 10 years and truly miss the people and the great roads all over the state, especially around Eureka Springs.
Can’t wait til we move back!

Great story. In the 356 days it was easy to spot a P-car owner beside the road. Nowadays Porsches are are looking the same - but then they are much more reliable and have a much better social
media presence.
Having said that, with a bag of tools and some 356 knowledge I've managed a couple of laps around the USA, in my '56 coupe - they were memorarble adventures.

Arkansas has the best roads of any place. Great smith roads a million curves and the speed limit is 55 for roads only a dedicated racer can take the corners at the speed limit.

We once drove for over an hour and did not see anyone else. Just endless fantastic roads. An Porsche Palooza is great. Where else can you see a 918 covered in road dirt and bugs.

The community is good but I think it used to be better.

I can’t remember the last time that a fellow Porsche driver waved at me locally... when I was in LA a few weeks ago, every 911 and Boxster driver waved.

Oddly, when I drive my WRX, every WRX and STI driver waves.

You wanna get waves? In Arkansas drive a Jeep Wrangler!

Great story............if your coil was replaced with a silver Bosch, it will malfunction and leave you stranded. I've had three brand new silver Bosch coils fail and leave me stranded before I learned on this forum the Bosch silver coils are bad quality. The engine heat kills them. Options are to either buy on old used black Bosch coil or purchase an MSD (can't recall the exact replacement and car is stored far from me). Buy an MSD and remove the sticker to make it look better in your compartment. It's not a question if the Bosch will fail, because it will, trust me!

FWIW - The shop installed a new Permatune CDI,which now “looks” identical to the old Bosch box and their coil. www.permatune.com
