i think i can get one for my office on the company dime. might take some doing, but wtf?

you all like them? anyone?

my back gets occasionally sore..mildly. getting up and moving helps. thinking i might benefit from a tall desk i can stand at.

Then you'll want comfy shoe inserts, more cushioned shoes, an accessory to hold you lunch and snacks while you stand, and on and on …….

They go great with sciatica. :cool:

No way. My feet hurt bad enough at the end of the day without standing on them even more.

I have contemplated getting one - some of my peers are using them. The process of getting approval and delivery on company dime where I work (large company) is typically 1-2 months. If you go that route make sure it's one that can raise and lower to accommodate both standing and seated work positions. And make sure they bolt/clamp it to the desk. A person here used hers as a grab bar to stand up and it flipped over on her.

GF has been using one at work for two years and still likes it.

This one does not have a family history.
Rather, my folks gave it to me as a graduation gift.
This is a bit nicer, and I think the case is solid (not filled)

I have a varidesk.

Not anywhere near Hollywood, and far from a hipster. I like it, but I mostly sit these days. I was dealing with lower back pain when I first started using the varidesk. I did months of PT and the lower back pain was "cured" by doing core strength exercises. For me, if lower back pain flares up, its because I've been lazy and haven't been doing my core exercises.

I love my varidesk...stand most of the time, unless I need to think.

I picked it because it was the tallest one out of the bunch, and I'm over 6'2". It also has room for 2 24 inch monitors (barely...).
6 months after I bought it, everyone in my office had one, either because they all wanted one or because they felt guilty.

It's heavy with two heavy monitors, but I'm tall enough to be able to lift it just fine. Some of the shorter girls had lots of problems until they switched to some lightweight monitors, now it's easy for them as well.

I've been using one for the last 5 years. Sitting all day is the new smoking :)

It helped with my back issues.

Everyone in our art department had one. They all liked them. I didn't get one because I was up from my desk a lot anyway, but they were pretty much chained to their computer screens.

We install them at just about everyone’s workstation that does mostly desk work. We use the leg sets that lift the whole desk and I try to lift at least five feet worth of top so paperwork can be done standing and not just computer work.

The biggest benefit I see is not the ability to stand so much as the user being able to set the desk height to be ergonomically correct for their size.

Also great when you need to work under the desk wiring up computers- like a car lift!

We have them available at work but they don’t seem to help me when I’ve used them, standing makes my back hurt just as long as when I’m sitting. If your office is like mine they will provide it as an accommodation with a drs note, but a chiropractors note will usually suffice.

Full disclosure: I do corporate design and I'm a commercial furniture dealer. Hope the info below is helpful.

The whole deal with a stand up desk is to vary body movement during the day not to provide another way to be stagnant all day. So, standing at a desk all day isn't any healthier for anyone than sitting all day. Bodies need to move and change positions during the work day to be most productive.

A standup desk should have variable height adjustment so it goes from desk height (around 29"-30" to counter height, roughly 42"). This provides the ability to move around while working during the day. The top moves up or down without having to move anything off the surface. It also provides a multi-purpose surface for on the spot pop-up meetings and not require seating for everyone. The Varidesk can accomplish some of this, but frankly, it's looks a bit hardware-ish intense and they aren't all that inexpensive. A user is also stuck with a contraption that literally takes up the entire desk surface eliminating the ability to perform other functions, like paper work or impromptu meetings and having presentation materials other than a computer screen.

There are many alternatives in the standup desk universe that provide a more multi-functional surface and mechanism and are reasonably close to the cost of a Varidesk by function if you chose a manual adjustment model; electric units are available and are pretty cool but more expensive. The height adjustable mechanism can be fitted to an existing surface (not a normal desk) saving money or can be ordered with it's own top. The tops are usually commercial grade laminate (not melamine), but can be provided in veneer if upscale is required.

Search out a manufacturer or dealer for the products as they can help with the finishes & options. A couple middle-market manufacturers are; esiergo.com. ki.com, mayline.com, maxonfurniture.com or indianafurniture.com. These are all American made product manufacturers, although I'm sure some parts come from other countries.

For those of you that work for companies having furniture contracts, all the major brands market these solutions so talk with your company facilities person.

I've been using a stand up desk for more than 10 years. Well worth it & you don't need to spend a fortune getting a good set-up.
Mine is a manual lift platform that sits on a normal desk. It has gas shocks that help lift it and it works great. About $300 from memory.

I've worked from home forever, but I use a pub size table with a plain old cardboard box to support my laptop. So I stand most of the time, when making phone calls. I don't do a lot of desk work anymore, more in the field these days. But I used to make it a point to stand for at least five hours of the work day.
