What’s this wire near my gas meter?

Ok boyz

I got a fresh gas line and outdoor meter about 2 years ago. Works great, never look at it.
But Here’s a stranded yellow wire, I’d say it’s 12gauge.

Comes from the street-side of the gas line and to the meter and looks like this. What is it? Did they just run it with the new line for future needs or something?

Or is it a job that got overlooked?

Cheers

Probably the locater wire to trace the gas line location.

chapo 06-06-2019 10:01 AM

Yes, tracer wire - because your gas line is non-metallic and the metal inside the wire can be picked up by a locator, if needed.

Around here, they also lay yellow colored plastic tape on top of the pipe so it gives somewhat of a indicator/warning to anyone who is digging where the line is buried.

Fuse!
Wiley Coyote style!!!

Yep. Tracer wire doesn’t seem so exciting now, does it?

GH85Carrera 06-06-2019 11:18 AM

Yep, tracer wire. Just wind it around the post, and to make it look nice, maybe use a zip tie to hold the wire out of the way and against the gas line. Then hit it all with grey paint to match.

Didn’t read the replies, but it’s a tracer wire.

Although the lack of a tracer wire could make things pretty exciting.

+1
Yep, it's for intel. THEY know where your gas lines are, the bastages. There's probably one in your toilet too.

So You guys say I’m supposed to tie it in to one of the buss bars in my panel?

Awesome! This place has all the answers

Thanks!

KFC911 06-07-2019 03:49 AM

Not if you cut it. Do you still have toilets inside? Focus man, focus...

No, if you want to test an ignition coil, tie it to the center terminal........

MBAtarga 06-07-2019 05:52 AM

Like for a 9 volt battery, test it for voltage by sticking it on your tongue.

It’s a secret listening device. And a tracer wire.

slow&rusty 06-08-2019 05:11 AM

why a tracer wire.
also a bit heavy ga for tracer

There is a transition under ground from metal to plastic. The tracer wire is used so the utility location service can tie their transmitter onto the wire and "trace" the location of the plastic pipe underground to mark the area so as contractors, etc will hopefully avoid the area when digging or boring with any equipment.

T77911S 06-10-2019 07:02 AM

yes, I know what a tracer wire is.
I have fiber that I have to locate for work using a tracer.
that tracer seems kind of thick, most companies want to go cheap and put in a thinner ga wire.

are you sure it transitions to plastic. they may want it metal so local home owners cant break it to easily.
did not know it transitioned to plastic.

chapo 06-10-2019 08:43 AM

It’s a tracer wire installed by the plumber and required by code. It is what Dig Alert or any other underground utility located uses to find the plastic, yes plastic, gas lines underground. This is not a mystery or conspiracy, read the plumbing code or call the utility company. The size of wire is dictated by code.

T77911S 06-10-2019 09:55 AM

ok.
just seemed a bit odd if it was metal pipe all the way.

Mike Andrew 06-11-2019 06:35 AM

Answers a question I have had since gas line replacement. The knowledge here.........
