Dawgy door...permamently temporary...
 

Gimme some ideas guys....

I have a sliding back door, want to leave it open (say 6"), and fab an insert with a dawgy door at the bottom...somewhat permanent. The door now closes against it...but it's removable too.

Just thought of this...so kicking around ideas...

Methinks just a simple wooden framed insert, with weather stripping, wedged in place is all it takes...mebbe even insulate it with a foam panel up top? OK....

Now I want some good ideas :)...

Security Boss Pet Doors. Ours is large because of our St. Bernard, but our Basset leaps through with no problem. Very high quality, two thick flaps held down magnetically. Couldn’t live without it. You can block it off with a slide in board, available in several sizes, etc. Much higher quality than the crap sold at PetSmart. Big fan.

They make a cheaper version with one flap also. Had that one at our old house. Worked fine for years but went for the heavy duty version (forgot what it’s called) when we moved. I think I payed about $600. Two thick flaps that do a great job of keeping cold/hot air out, double pane glass, etc. Took the pups a few days to get used to the heavier flaps but now they go through like nothing.

We have a mutt with diabetes insipidus. Drinks copious amounts of water and pees all the time. The dog door saves us from getting up to let him out twice each night and we’re able to be gone more than a few hours at a time. Life saver.

What if anything prevents unwanted guests coming through a doggie door ? I'm talking possums/raccoons/mice/rats or the neighbors dogs/cats ? I've never had a pet door that's why I'm asking .

My dawg....seriously. She's not quite 4 months....already killed her first baby snake, and will take on Goliath....GSD ;)....fearless in other words, and has "killer, prey instincts" for a Lab. Mine opens to a raised deck....acres of predators out back....but my backyard is soon to be "off limits".... dawgs do that imo. A non-issue for me...I hope :)

If you have skunks around, be careful. At least lock it at night. My Golden/Beagle/bunch of other stuff mix got skunked bad a few weeks ago. Terrible night for her and my wife. Luckily I was on a business trip. She still stinks a little. The dog that is. My wife is still a bit pissed at me for not being here :-)

I would scrounge up an old sliding door (or screen door for a slider...but those are flimsy) that will fit the tracks and cut it down, replacing the glass with wood or plexiglass.

The door is a nice, heavy, wood Anderson slider, that I've stained, so I think I have something in mind that will work just fine, and look great....

No skunks but me....even the squirrels, wabbits, fox, cats, and deer have decided my yard has gone to the dawgs in the past year :).

Thats exactly what I did for my gf so her cat can come and go as it pleases.. Made it out of 1X2 and screened it, has a small l opening at the bottom. No pics though..

I had one like the picture made out of aluminum, it was quality for what I paid. I hated the slider though so as part of my remodel I had a permanent 2 flap one built into the wall.

You need a saw, piece of plywood, a dog door, and some primer. Possibly a drill and a saber saw. The door should come with screws.

Cut a stick to wedge the door shut against the plywood. At the outside, you might have to cut some trim if the dog door needs something thicker than plywood to mount to.

No, they are less than 200. Look some more.

Ours leads out to a deck...two short flights of stairs down to the fenced portion of our yard. With three dogs we rarely see anything visit the area where the pups have access. Yet, after all these years, our 10 year old mutt killed a small possum a few weeks ago and brought it into our bedroom around 2 am to show us. When he saw my angry response, he carried it back outside and dropped it...i then tossed it into the woods.

Ours is easily big enough for a person to climb through...and saved us once when my son was accidentally locked out. Not too worried about intruders where we are. With three dogs and a small armory, it wouldn’t be a wise effort. But, since the possum incident, my wife inserts the safety panel at night when I’m traveling.

My Springer Spaniel had a dog door that I added a small ramp with a pressure switch.
Anytime she entered...it would trigger a momentary buzzer.
Very helpful to keep track of her.

you can buy dog doors with a glass panel above them - made just for your use

or for more fun - DIY and talk to a glass shop about the panel; you'll wrap it in Al or wood with a rubber seal - code sez impact resistant is req'd

no idea where as my dog now has to ask to go out back

This is gonna be easy....I'll go with solid panels of some sort up top...air pocket/insulation panel, don't want glass. Decent, low cost door @ the bottom....that a HUMAN can't crawl through ;).

For smaller dogs check out the sureflap pet door. Reads a chip on the collar and will only unlock for your dog.

There are several patio door pet door inserts out there. Tons on Facebook and craigslist slightly used for $50-$100 usually too.
