Biometric door locks--anyone have these?
 

I'm outfitting my new house with locks, and am considering using biometric door locks for the outside doors. Seems it would be nice not to have to dig out keys, and they can be programmed with family members, etc. I'm curious if anyone has these in their homes, and how reliable they are.

Anyone have these on your home?

I have a buddy with a lock on his doors that is a four digit code. If you enter the wrong code three times it makes you want 10 minutes, or use the key to get in. No thumbprint, just a 4 digit code to lock or unlock the door.

Is it on an outside door?

Piece of tape to lift your print off the glass/plastic/etc.
Print a photo of your face.
Then access your computer, car, house, and safe.
The fun starts from there with bank wire transfers to Moldovia cleaning out your retirement.

Locks just keep out stupid criminals.
Biometrics and modern tech just adds a faster way to steal.
Remember there is a standard gov't backdoor and phone-home in all modern electronics.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

they will be hacked (eventually) - maybe safer than a key tho

Lots of smart lock options out there, but I haven’t played with them.

Curious if all you guys worried about hacking have shatter proof windows? Because those can be hacked by a caveman with a rock...

That's what on site alarms are for. In fact, I don't get the bio-metrics thing. Too many movies and TV shows? Get a digital keypad if you don't wanna fool with a key. I won't even buy a Ring and my CCTV is not on the wifi.

I have entry doors in the front and back that I use a four digit code. If the battery dies I use a key. I like them a bunch. Never had locks on my doors but then my truck was stolen right in my compound. I’m isolated on five acres.

A friend programmed my finger to his lock while visiting. Worked reliably. Played with it a little.
Didn't work with fingers not programmed.

If I had one I would program multiple fingers on both hands for myself.

Personally I use digital locks. Keep a key on car ring in case battery dies.

Yes. His front door. But his front porch is 6 feet deep or so and he has a glass storm door.

Decided against the fingerprint lock because of concerns with weatherproofing and wet weather reliability.

I installed a Samsung biometric fingerprint door lock a year ago, which is relatively expensive. It is a reliable door lock that not only provides two unlock modes for passwords and fingerprints, but also features intrusion alarms, PSB fire tests and fire detection sensors. So far, our addition has not been affected by any invasion.

I can't image wanting the fingerprint lock on an outside door. I know with my iPhone, if my hand is wet, or if I am sweaty, it will not read my fingerprint, and I have to enter the 6 digit code to unlock my phone.

The keypad at my buddies house is nice. I does only take 4 digits to get it, but the bad guys don't necessarily know that. He also lives in a gated community with a lot of older retired busybody folks living in the neighborhood.

At home we come 99.995% of the time through the garage anyway, and I bet I have not used the front door key in over a year.

I have a biometric lock which supports fingerprint, 6 digit code, and an actual key. Love it. I can go for a run, paddle, etc and not have to worry about a damn key.

For all you paranoid folks, how many of you still use a hide-a-key or put a spare under a flower pot?

If someone really wants to get into your house, any lock is useless.

I saw RFID (smartphone) activated locks at a rental house recently. Seems to make sense for that kind of property. For my own house (and car) I still prefer keys. KISS

have this schlage. 4 to 6 digit code to get in. Z-wave so pretty local. good performer. can set temp codes for clearers etc and delete them easily.

any plate in a restaurant or public area will do.
or any smooth piece of material left in the garbage bin...behind the house...on your own property....when someone steals an entire bin of trash.

Or just use a rock to break out the thin glass covering one of the many huge openings in the house and walk right in.

And set off the alarm, and piss off the Doberman that lives there.
