Revelation setting the alarm clock!

Have to be at the RV dealer at 8:00 AM tomorrow, so I set my dual alarm clock just now. The last two settings were 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM from about 16 -18 months ago, to get to LAX for some flights. Gawd, I'm glad I was able to retire and not die at my desk, or on an airplane.

Guys like you are an inspiration for me, Hugh. I'll be 62 in September. The magic number is 65.
The projects are already lined up.

Hugh R 06-09-2019 06:44 PM

I retired 14 months ago at 64, because I could.

I think I travelled about a million miles in the last 15 years, My wife doesn't seem to understand why I don't want to get on planes anymore.

vash 06-09-2019 06:49 PM

62! And I’m out. It’s the ONLY reason I am rooting for 62. Being 62? Boo!

Baz 06-09-2019 06:56 PM

Until one actually gets there....no one really appreciates how wonderful retirement actually feels like.

Moments like Hugh mentioned give some insight though. :)

I retired about 7 years ago at 65. It was a little daunting knowing I wasn't getting a paycheck anymore! I remember shortly after retiring, driving up to Home Depot or somewhere on a weekday morning thinking, "I don't have to be anywhere or report to anyone." Weird but good feeling!

KFC911 06-10-2019 03:07 AM

When you have to set yer alarm....to get up at 8....you have mastered retirememt too Hugh :)!

Fantastic job ya did there Richards...now take another year off and go sailing :)!

GH85Carrera 06-10-2019 09:54 AM

I just looked at the alarm clock app on my phone. One 7:00 AM, a 2:00 PM and 8:15 PM alarm in memory.

I have done the get up at 3:30 AM, get to the airport at 5:30 and wait routine a few times. I don't wanna do it again unless it is going somewhere really fun.

vash 06-10-2019 09:58 AM

i love telling Siri to shut off my 4:00 am alarm.

No need to twist my arm, KC. :D

I was retired due to health at 62 and being able to wake up whenever my body says so is exquisite!

What time is that? I am curious.

If it were my 15 y/o I would say that would be around 10-11 am.

I go to bed every night between 10-11 pm, and wake every morning before 6 am. My alarm goes off at 5:50 it is a rare day when I am not awake laying there thinking and waiting for it to go off. Sometimes if I know I have a busy day I just get up before it.

We were just on a long weekend / short vacation up in the smokey mountains, by 8 a.m. my wife and I had already walked 2-3 miles all 3 days we were there and back at the house getting ready for the day and making breakfast.

As time passes does the "natural" wake up time get later? I would feel cheated if I woke up after 8 am, like I just wasted the day, especially in the winter time.

I've been retired for fifteen years now. I sleep about five to six hours a night - go to bed between ten & eleven & wake up from four to five. Even if I go to bed later, I still wake up at the same time. I'd like to sleep more but it's not in the cards. I do take a rest for half an hour to forty five minutes each afternoon in my hammock though. I like seeing the mornings progress outside as the morning light begins to illuminate the world.

At first it was 6-ish, now it's 730-ish, unless I'm out all night dancing.

Yes. I get up Mon-Fri between 5:15 and 6am (whether I work from home or go into the office). If it weren't for the dogs, I think it would take me 2-4 weeks before I was staying up well past midnight and waking up at the same time as your 15 yo. I've always been like that.

I can get used to getting up early, and I like being up early and getting things done early. My wife does too, but we could/would both shift to a night owl schedule in no time flat if we didn't have any reason not to.

Jim Richards 06-10-2019 02:57 PM

I wake up when the sun peaking around the curtains gets bright enough, or when my dog gets restless.

Baz 06-10-2019 03:59 PM

Carpe Diem

I love retirement. Go to bed at 11, wake up at 5:30 and then have fun all day long.

Jim Richards 06-10-2019 04:32 PM

Have you joined our ranks, Shaun? :)

I'm not sure how much it counts if you move from one business to the next. Are you down to just "working" 10-20 hours a week now?

Shaun @ Tru6 06-10-2019 04:51 PM

Steve, my retirement plans have been to restore 911s and coach crew for about 30 years now. I’m doing just that exceptnrowing instead of coaching. Retirement where you don’t do anything is entirely foreign to me. Doing what you are passionate about on your own terms is what I call retirement. also working on a 4.0L MFI motor and proper flares (Singer has terrible flares) for my own reimagined line of cars. That’s retirement!

Brian 162 06-10-2019 05:27 PM

I retired in 2015 @55 yrs. old. I used to get up at 6 every day.
If I do a DE I have to be on the road by 6 AM. It kills me getting up that early now.
I set my alarm for 8 tomorrow, I'm taking my neighbor to physio. Then I'll go for a run.

Jims5543 06-10-2019 05:52 PM

We have changed our life pattern in the last month, we booked a trip to St. Lucia in July to celebrate out 30th anny early, we are in rooms that are basically outside and have no TV's so in preparation for the trip we are going to bed from 10-11 pm with no TV or electronics.

We used ot watch TV to go to sleep, the best thing we ever did was eliminate that. In many ways more than sleep. ;)

Even on vacation or when work is demanding, like tonight, where I may be lucky to be in bed at 12 midnight (punishment for a long weekend in the smokies) I will always wake up at 6 am.

I require no sleep and always have been this way, I am forcing myself to get 7-8 hours sleep because I know it is good for me, I prefer 5-6 hours, I feel more alert and better at 5-6.

7-8 makes me too relaxed and not on edge. Hard to explain.

I see me owning the operating this business for another 20 years, I hope in 10 to only work 20 hours a week and take a lot of vacations. Hell, I hope to be doing that in 5 years.

I honestly can take off anytime I want and work whatever hours I want.

As long as the economy is strong I will work a lot and grab all I can so I can play a lot when it crashes.

As I did from 2008 to 2016 I played a lot and worked out a lot.

Is it wrong to hope for another slow down?
