One of these--79 Wagoneer Brougham, which was very similar to this one (I even had the same backdated grill after a big front end impact), but mine was in much worse shape--no lift, black hood, tweaked frame, rusty, slipping Quadratrac chain, etc..
![]() But after much savings I was able to upgrade to this--although mine was a non-Euro, no spoiler and had gold spiderwebs.

I inherited my brothers 1970 914/4 when it was about 17 years old. Pic is not of the exact car, but it was a simple looking one in Tangerine that stayed in the family till about 2000 :

For my 16th birthday my brother gave me his 1964 Dodge Dart GT . At the time he was in the Navy and roomed with a couple of gear heads . He had " built " the 225 slant 6 by boring out the cylinders , had an Offy 4 barrel manifold with a Holley carb and Clifford Research dual out headers . The car was fairly rare because it had a factory Hurst floor shifter , if I remember correctly it was a 4 speed . I raced many a 289 Mustang back in the day and that Dart would walk away from them in the 1/4 it was a quick car . Sadly the NY road salt slowly killed her

![]() 1959 TR3a This is not the actual car, but it looked something like this the last time I saw it. Years of Upstate NY winters reduced it to a pile of iron oxide. My brother and I had a lot of fun with it and it started a life-long interest in all kinds of sports cars. |

Started with a 1960 VW Beetle I paid $150 dollars for. It didn't get me there fast, but it got me off the ranch!
I bought 1972 2002 like Ricks when I was a senior in HS, Green with tan interior. I drove it through college.

Drove this until I got my drivers license (in those days if you took drivers ed. you could get full TX DL with no restrictions at all when you were 14). After that, the family '56 Ford Station Wagon. In those days at the high school I attended very few actually had their own car.
1959 Cushman (3 HP)... also spent a lot of time on a Farmall "Super M"..

My $600 1960 VW Bug, 36 HP when new, 25 or so after 100,000 miles. Dad gave me an interest free loan, and I was responsible for 100% of all operational costs, except the insurance. Dad paid for the insurance.

1964 MG 1100 coupe; threw a rod on a trip back from Virginia Beach to Boonsboro MD. Next was a 1962 MGA; came over a hill on a back country road and crashed into someone who had stopped, oops. 73 Opel GT complete with cragars... fun times.

Started out with a 2.3L Pinto, that was surprisingly quick, replaced that with a 1970 Pontiac 350 Lemans, and on to a 1978 BRG Datsun 280Z as I graduated......hence, my screen name.

None in high school. My first car was a 1964 Chevy Impala I bought for $100 in 1970. I was 19 years old in my 3rd year of college.

First car..........
My high school car was a 1952 Ford 2 Dr Mainline sedan that I put a 1964 vintage 289 into. The original engine was a flathead v8 w/overdrive. Since it had the overdrive option, the rear end ratio was something like a 4.10:1! With the 289 it had great acceleration but not much on the top end. After saving $$$ for a while, I got it painted a dark metallic green color and put MT mag wheels on it. I took the radio out of the dash and mounted a set of gauge there. Then I made a console so there would be a place for a radio. All this was done by a 16-17 year old (me) and taught me a LOT about cars and mechanic-ing! In 1968 I traded the Ford even for a 1964 Triumph Spitfire! Went from a hot rod to a sports car (sorta)!

The question for this thread is great - asking what I drove in High School brings back so many memories of what I drove, how I drove, where I drove, and what else we did in the cars
I started out driving my dad's car - he commuted by train, so if I dropped him off at the train station the car was mine for the day. It was a '67 Chevy Impala, white 4 door with a blue vinyl interior and a 327 4 bbl. Than I got my own car - also a '67 Chevy with a 327 4bbl, but a Camaro! ![]() ![]() Interestingly, my "best buds" at the time also drove Chevys. Matt had a '72 El Camino - black & gold, with sidepipes he put on in addition to the Holley 750 double-pumper he put on it that made the gas gauge go down almost as fast as the speedo went up. Billy had a '67 Chevelle SS convertible with high-backed bucket seats out of a Gran Prix. The car started out red, then it was painted corvette yellow (for 1 day), then blue, and then back to red - Billy was in training to be an auto body man. "Big Red" We finally retired it a couple of years ago as the frame rusted so bad, it bent in half. I had too much fun in that truck.

We had one kid in high school that was the son of the guy that owned the local engine hot rod shop. He had a old Chevy Nova, the little version. It had some crazy HP monster. He loved to go bug all the boys about racing for pink slips. For some reason he never asked me to race in my 60 VW with a 0 to 60 that was impossible if I had a headwind, or any uphill slope. I put a set of 5 tires on it for under 25 bucks. 4 tires, mounted and balanced. 4 recap tires. It was the ultimate cheap car.
