It is hard to screw up a breakfast so it is not bad, but it is expensive for just a breakfast unless you are a real pig. It is weird that some people assume that a tip is not expected. They have the waitress bring the coffee, and water, and clean up after we leave. I always leave a tip. Usually the waitress looks like they could use a few bucks. No doubt it all goes into the tip pool and is divided up in some form, but that is just a guess.

It is not a place I would go normally.

Exactly. I occasionally go to an Indian food buffet. The food is amazing. They have a slew of wait staff that bring water, clean/clear plates while you're eating, clean/clear tables after you've left, etc.... I think the buffet is about $25 for 2 people. I usually tip about $5. Those guys have a crap job that I wouldn't want. $5 isn't going to put me in the poor house, but I remember being young and not making much money. An extra $5 for those guys could be a big deal.

I also go to a little place for breakfast occasionally. It's been in the same location since 1934 run by the same family. They only take cash (maybe checks too). I think they have a sign that says they aren't going to be fast. It's good food run by good people. I think I tip about $8 on a $20-25 lunch. I wouldn't wait on someone for 30-60 mins for 15% of $20-25.

I have seen people that would tip 15% on a $12 meal.

I've never been a waiter at a restaurant, but I was a bartender.

Unless yer at a concert....you hand me a $15 can....we're done! Now....GOML seat :)

We don't have one around here, but have to issues eating at one.

There are people like that at any type of restaurant.

You did good on the parking lot dash. I did the same and got busted. The bill payer left to the bathroom before we bailed, and I added a $20 while he was gone because he was undertipping by quite a lot. On his return, unfortunately, he did a last check of the closed card holder presumably verifying he had not left his card (what on earth is that foldable bill holder called anyway) and spotted my $20.

Oh what a $**** storm... "You think I don't tip enough", "how dare you", etc... "Why don't you pay the bill then"... Which I did with great pleasure and never had lunch with the guy again. Lesson learned. Wait for the parking lot and fake a forgotten pair of glasses...

We would go out mountain biking all day, figured all you can eat buffet would be perfect. Me and one other normal sized human, and two big guys. Matt from Montana was a skinny 6'5" and ate like he had a hollow leg. Randy, who was a 6 foot tall Samoan guy with a neck like the average guys waist, ridiculously strong. He broke the frame of his Klein, bottom bracket could not handle him pushing on the pedals. Cracked the replacement at the seat post, not sure how that was even possible. He ate about like you would expect a man like that would, prodigiously.

You could fit four plates on a tray. We were going back to fill up our trays a third time and the manager is standing there with his arms crossed and a not very welcoming look on his face for a guy ostensibly in the service industry.

"You guys have had enough."

"We already paid though, and are still hungry."

"You need to go. There is no way you ate that much food, you must be stealing it somehow."

"These cycling shorts don't even have pockets, where would we be putting it?'

"You going to go or do I call the cops?"

Pretty sure Randy could have handled however many cops they would have sent, but we left. Went back a month later and the guy points to the right to refuse service sign and points to the door, did not even say a word to us. Guess we should have waited longer to go back, but there are only so many all you can eat situations available

Do you think the manager was really out of line? I don't. And I have nothing bad to say about you. You are one of the gentlemen on this board.

He wouldn't be out of line if he also took aside people that ate lightly and refunded a portion of the cost. But if he only cares about those that get too much for their dollar, than yes, he is out of line. He accused them of stealing then reneged on their purchase agreement. Unless there was a caveat on the sign, all you can eat means exactly that.

RWebb 06-28-2019 04:35 PM

the manager was really out of line because he violated a contract and truth in adv. laws

you cannot adv. "all you can eat" and then kick out someone who paid their fee then ate
