hooray for surge protectors

Tree fell in the night, hit the line from the pole to the house.

Surge protectors on 2 tv sets, the stereo/dvd/wii setup, my desktop setup, the router and Pi were all protected. The protectors they plugged into are toasted.

Only had a few spares here, gotta hit the stores tomorrow for 2 more replacements and 2 more spares.

I figure about $5k saved...

Late 80's in Anchorage. I didn't have protection.

Chugach Electric, on a sunny day, sent a big power surge through. Fried a unit, I don't remember which. I kept receipts back then and a letter with copy of receipt netted me a check from them for $200 something.

I've got really good insurance that should cover stuff like this but I'd rather spend a little money protecting everything anyway.

You plugged surge protectors into surge protectors?

I thought I was the only idiot who did that.

I've installed a Surge protector on each of the 200Amp service panels for our house, and one on the 200Amp panel in my shop. They protect everything in the house. We've had several severe storms in the area in the past 8 years, and other than a lightening strike that entered the house from the alarm wiring running out to the shop that took out the alarm circuit board, we've had no issues with anything connected via house power.

I've got 1 of these on each of the 3 panels:

They protect both ways. My coffee bean grinder sometimes blasts out about 800 volts when it gets switched to off A few (expensive) things were dying that were on the same 240 volt cable from the breaker box. An electrician friend said to just put a surge protector between the grinder and the outlet, and everything has been fine since.

Nice, what kind of surge protectors? I assume it wasn't the cheap $5 Chinese stuff from Walmart.

Installed something similar when the heated floor system was put in the bathroom . Wanted to reduce the chances of removing tile if it got fried. Was only around $350 installed. Seems like cheap insurance for all the electronics in the house.

Whatever work bought forever ago that the fire marshall didn't like on an inspection a few years ago. Something about the cords being too long for the spec required or something.

My costs were about $75 each IIRC - as they were on Slickdeals. And I didn't have to pay labor, because I didn't have to call "that guy" - I was the guy.

I installed one of these whole house surge protectors. Took about 30 minutes. I did go back and install the optional cover which was about $20 more to clean up the looks.

I use a battery backup on the TV, router, computers. Covers the cat6 cable and coax as well.

Sounds good. Maybe even more important than a surge protector. Brown outs (low voltage) kill more electrical items than surges.

We live out in the country and while we seldom have major power issues there are times you can hear them clicking and buzzing.

The only bad part is a $25 battery for each, every three years.
