Fun at U-Haul

I actually like my local U-Haul. I've rented trailers from them on occasion and they are cheap, the stuff is well-maintained and always available but I had fun dropping a trailer off yesterday morning...

So, I had to leave work early on Monday, rent a trailer from U-Haul, drive to Kingsport (TN), load up furniture from my Mom’s condo, drive back to Knoxville and unload, then drop off the trailer by 7:00 Tuesday morning.

So I show up at U-Haul yesterday morning at about 6:50. I'm usually at work by 6:30, so I'm already running late. They open at 7:00 sharp. There’s ONE GUY there. Some folks (looked like an older woman, her daughter and her daughter’s son) were there before me. I walk in behind them when the ONE GUY unlocks the door at 7:00. This woman/daughter need to rent a trailer to pull behind their Toyota Highlander. OK, no big deal. The ONE GUY working there proceeds to enter all of their crap into the computer, then has to go out and inspect the Highlander. He walks approximately 1.5 mph - can barely detect movement. He comes back in and says, “You need a hitch.”. So they add that to the computer entry. He goes thru the myriad of questions like “do you want the standard insurance, blah, blah, blah” and keeps pecking away at the computer. By now there are two guys standing behind me waiting on this ONE GUY. Finally they finish up the crap for this woman/daughter and the ONE GUY says, “That will be $161.57. Do you want to put this on your card?”. The older woman whips out a checkbook and starts writing a check. I’m starting to get impatient at this point. She finally gets the check written and the ONE GUY has to enter her checking account info, etc., into the computer. He then says, “The system won’t accept your check. It says ‘insufficient funds’…do you have a card you can put it on?”. The older woman says, “Well, I promise there is money in the account.". The ONE GUY stares at her prompting her to say, "I have a Sears card.”. ?!?!?! The ONE GUY stares at her again. She finally says that she will have to go to the bank and get cash. She asks the ONE GUY what time the bank opens. ?!?!? He stares at her for a second and says, "I have no idea.". So, they turn around and walk out.

He asks me what I need and I tell him I just need to drop off a trailer. Two minutes later, I’m out of there. At 7:30.

At least they found one that will show up to work, and do the job !....not a common thing these days, because the ones that do show up, are overworked.

Holy crap that ONE GUY works at my u-haul too! Pecking away at the computer with two fingers really takes it over the top for me.

Maybe by making you wait like that ONE GUY saved you from getting in an accident or worse....

(But, yeah, I had a somewhat similar incident at Lowes about a week ago that inspired me to write in here too, out of frustration)

Yep. When I moved my wife (fiance at the time) into our first house, I showed up at the U-haul promptly at 8:00--their opening time. There was a line and the door was locked. Around 9:15 a visibly hungover 20-something party girl (sun glasses, disheveled clothes jumbo coffee, smeared mascara) shows up, unlocks the door, darts in, and in a display of amazing drunken dexterity, locks the door behind her. Around 9:30 she finally unlocks it and lets people in.

Around 10:00--two hours after we intended to start--it's finally my turn. I am informed that they do not have the truck I had reserved. They offer to let me pick one up from 100 miles away. I quickly figure out that they are going to charge me penalty mileage and it will consume at least another two hours. I tell them to pound sand.

We head over to the local Ryder, have a truck in 15 minutes. While the base fee is higher, the mileage allowance is also had higher and I end up saving $50 on the rental.

WAY back in the day, my brother and I worked at a Texaco station that rented U-Hauls too. On Sundays we were the crew. When one of us had a problem with a customer, the other became the manager. We had a system. It worked for us. This was way before the days of computers and the forms had to be filled out in triplicate.

when I drop off the trucks or trailers, I just park them, leave the key in the box and take a pic of the truck or trailer sitting in the lot. Then drive away.

I bet his brother works at the post office.

Last time I rented a truck the ONE GUY was actually the oldest man living. He did the walk around of the truck and we both saw nothing.

We drove to Naples and my wife's no good nephew meets us to drive the rest of the way to Ft. Lauderdale. He goes to return it and the U-Haul place says there is damage to the truck on the top. No-good-nephew says OK and I get charged for it. I raise hell and call VISA and file a claim. VISA held tight and I don't get charged.

Nephew should put in an application to be a ONE GUY. ;)

Same goes for the customer. Sometimes you want to reach around an pull their ass out through their throat.

"Well maintained," ha ha, funniest thing I have read in years.

You really know how to throw cold water on a good rant. SmileWavy
Sometimes it's good to just let somebody who is pissed off be pissed off - or join in and be pissed off and irrational right along with them.
I think he should have kicked the woman's daughter right in the ass - just because she was there.

Por_sha911 07-04-2019 05:56 AM

I'm with herr_oberst.

Yes, I am frustrated at times but I get embarrassed when my self-centered impatience shows up and I'm trying to learn how to not let it get to me. So far there are mixed reviews.

If that is the worst thing that happened that day it sounds like a first world problem.

thingmon 07-04-2019 06:14 AM

Ugh. Don't get me started. How they are still in business, I have no idea.
