Convection microwaves
So lame...but does anyone know anything about these appliances? What do you use them for and what are they good at if anything. We are in the midst of a kitchen remodel and a convection microwave has been suggested.
Our oven is 36” and takes a decent while to heat up. I’m wondering if a convection MW is suited to warming up slices of pizza and that type of stuff. Uptown problems... Thanks for any feedback. |
Sounds like a combi mW to me
MW + grilll + hot air i have one from sharp, free standing I've baked cakes in it there's plenty of options to do various of things with it and it will do pizza much better then just a MW ever could |
I had an early Panasonic Dimension 4. It was fantastic. Got up to temp' fast. Great baked potatoes, roasties. An easy way to do oven fries.
So I bought the latest Panasonic convection microwave as a replacement. Absolutely useless. After an hour oven fries aren't even cooked. But the idea is good. So you have a microwave for all your usual stuff. Then when things get busy such as Christmas you have an extra oven without extra space being taken up. |
Convection ovens and microwaves do two separate things. What it sounds like you are describing is a convection oven with a microwave in it.
Convection ovens are great. So are microwaves. I like to keep the separate. You don't want to be locked into spending more $$$ repairing the microwave in your big oven when you could just buy a new microwave for less. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1562189187.jpg Best of both worlds. $150 Sharp microwave up top, $700 Bosch convection oven down below. The convection oven has a "rapid heat" function that uses the convection system for pre-heating. Works well. |

Convection with micro is called by various manuf a speed cook oven. It can use both simultaneously, all halogen, top or bottom, both and all microwave. Best appliance in my kitchen. I have the halogen kind.
Spendy. https://www.geappliances.com/ge/advantium-oven.htm Also there is an heat element powered version that is more common. Some have a broiling function. So then you would have a salamander. When mine (GE Advantium) dies for good ( I've already torn the thing down to the base to replace the lower lamp — $140 for that — the upper one is 250), I'm going to another brand/type like Bosch or Jenn Air. Some of these damn things are way up in the $1000's. Some are 2 grand or a bit more. That's my speed. On another note these are no substitute for a big oven for the turkey, etc. |
we had a used GE that did both mw and convection heat it broke
unless space is a problem I would just get two units as the combined unit is way too high priced 450+ and up vs 100 or 2 each also watch out for the exit vent it can melt a counter top or backing and start a fire |
A convection oven is basically a standard oven wirh a fan. Air is circulated which keeps a more consistent temperature within the oven.
A micowave convection oven will have some type of heating element and a fan to circulate the air. Microwave cooks from within while the convection oven heats the circulating air which adds outside browning and crisping.. |
Thanks for sharing all the thoughts/experiences. Sound s like I should investigate it a little further.

^ no kidding, crazy
I went with a shelf and a ~$100 microwave instead of a built in. Great for when/if I need to replace. Boils down to what you use it for. I dont see the need, but I have a pair of convection ovens when I need to bake a lot. To me a microwave heats up leftovers and occasionally something else. I'd rather spend the $$ on a better range or wall oven. |
