Pet cooling mats?
Anyone got or tried a pet cooling mat to keep your pets cool or help them cool off after they've been in the heat?
Positive or negative opinions? |
My little guy found his own cooling mat. He'll go outside and when we bring him back in... right to the A/C vent in the kitchen he goes!. Smart dog.

Since neither of my dogs can walk on the ceiling where the AC vents are....
In our old house, 2 stories, concrete foundation, tile floor directly on the concrete foundation, they would lay their tummies right on the cool tile and that would cool them off. We don't have that option where we are now. |
Our guy was put off by the texture of the mat so he hasn't really been willing to lie down on it yet.

My dog chewed his apart....

Ice cubes in the water always helps.

So far, cooling mats are batting 1000

We have a black and tan short haired dachshund. He is mostly black. He loves to go lay in the sun on hot days and just get toatsy hot. He then comes in through the doggie door, and plops down on the tile floor after drinking a lot of water.
An hour later, he will go back out and get hot again. He hates winter time. He must be part lizard. |

The main reason to get one would be for them to use after we take them for walks. They both come back hot. They are both about 14 years old. We think it's important to get them out for walks, but also want them to be comfortable. They can't really tell us exactly what's going on. |

They do an excellent job telling you they are hot. They pant. That is their primary cooling method. Unlike humans they only have true sweat glands where they have no coat. Nose and paws.
You can use a misting bottle to dampen them which allows for evaporative cooling. Carry a bottle with you on those hot day walks and spritz Spritz down a few times during the walk. |

We don't walk that far, probably only a mile, and we don't walk in the heat of the day, and I do check the surfaces that we walk on for heat retention. I just want them to be able to get comfy when we get back. The mini dachshund will get on the bed when we get back, but then wants down after a few mins which is unusual. He's usually perfectly happy to stay on the bed. I assume it's because he's still warm from the walk. |
Spritz them down. It will help. I use an old windex bottle. I have two dachshunds.
Panting could be due to stress or illness but if they pant after a hot walk they are most likely hot. |
Get creative man! Run a pipe from the ceiling to the floor and patent it!! :D
Need a cool catchy name... then head for the Shark Tank! |
We bought one of the cooling mats on amazon and placed it where he lays a lot. He seems to really like it. I sat on it for a while and was impressed how much it cools.
