Sometimes I really wonder about people.

On father’s day my father-in-law and his wife were on their way to my place on his Harley and hit a deer. (That could be the story in itself)

My wife got a call from him, but couldn’t understand what he was trying to say. We put two and two together and start back tracking the route they would have taken to our house.

We arrive at the scene just as ambulance number one was leaving with his wife, and my FIL was getting loaded in to ambulance number two.

My ‘brother-in-law’ (My wife’s Sister’s Husband) was also coming by and was able to ride the Harley to BILs place while my wife went in the ambulance and I followed.

A few days in the hospital with 3 and 4 broken ribs respectively and now they are home trying to heal. Recovery is not easy when you’re in your mid 60’s.

Here is where things get interesting…

In the end it’s just a ‘thing’ and it isn’t really worth a family feud over. On the other hand, do you really want to call someone who would do something like this ‘family’?

My rant for today.

I read yer rant....made me IL :)

People suck....marryin' increases the odds of exposure :(

Good rant btw....

dad911 07-09-2019 02:41 PM

Last time I saw my sister and BIL was in court..... and every dollar we spent to get rid of them was well worth it.

Yup, sometimes family sucks. I hope your FIL and his wife healed well. That's all that really matters.

BIL Sounds like a real dick.

To the extent a song can keep me from knocking someone’s teeth out I listen to this

What’s been done in the dark will be brought to the light

The important thing is that the Folks are OK. It was a good sign that maybe it is time to stop riding, that's for the old man to decide, but maybe it isn't so bad it is off his hands now.

If you want a Harley, go get a Harley. They aren't very hard to come by. God bless the child that's got his own. Don't always assume that someone is trying to do you dirty because they want something. Keep your eyes open in the future though. People who want stuff usually get it.

Rusty Heap 07-09-2019 03:39 PM

its a motorcycle.

get over it.

move on, buy 3 more.

Brando 07-09-2019 03:41 PM

IMHO it wasn't the BIL's place to make that decision about someone else's property.

Yes, he is a dick.

Welcome to the club 71T. Family sucks whether by blood or marriage.

Maybe you all need to take a trip to Disney Land together?

Tobra 07-09-2019 05:10 PM

Good one Paul

>snort!<

first thing I thought of!

BiL is a Douchenozzle with a capital D. He knew that he was taking advantage of the situation. Fuch him, but unfortunately I also understand the FiL position of feeling a little bad.

Thanks but Speeder will think it's racist.

Will give you a good deal on mine.

Your family is getting torn apart over a crashed and repaired used motorcycle. Let it go...your dad doesn’t deserve the grief either. Suggest your wife let him off the hook to make this easier.

Plenty around...

Been to the dog park enough times to noticed that they don't care a wit about what they have at the moment.
They always want what the other dog has..

So if it's -20deg or 120deg outside, you are still gonna be the same person.

71T Targa 07-09-2019 08:44 PM

Thanks for the chuckle and the perspective.

We wouldn't be looking for a Harley except for this one, and we didn't want this one until my father in law was done riding. This is much earlier than we ever thought we'd be having this conversation.

As I said before, in the end it's just a thing. But it's a thing that has been a part of my wife's life since '96. Even if indirectly.

Yup. My wife is the oldest of 10 and the executor of her parents’ estate. There’s a few in her family that will probably be no better when the time comes.

epbrown 07-10-2019 05:47 AM

Yep, that's every family. The uncle that taught me to ride passed away and the next day his two sons from a previous marriage showed up and took all three of his bikes from my aunt's garage.

Clint Lando 07-10-2019 07:49 AM

dads bike
dads business

How did BIL get decision making power with FIL's insurance company?
BIL is a piece of work.

1990C4S 07-10-2019 07:56 AM

The fact that this was done 'in the background' means the BIL knows he's a douche. He values the bike more than his integrity.

For a very small price you learned a valuable lesson. They are not to be trusted.

Yes, he is a dick.

Especially when the owner is on meds that may affect his judgment.

Por_sha911 07-10-2019 10:29 AM

If you think this is bad, wait until someone dies and the vultures in the family swoop down and take things out of the house before the body is cold. I've seen this several times and swore that when my mom and dad passed I wouldn't fight over stuff. One of my siblings got a few things that they shouldn't have and I had to decide to just let it go.

As far as the bike is concerned, I have a feeling its the sentimental value that makes this tough. I can say from personal experience that you should make a commitment to yourself to let it go or take care of it now but don't let it get under your skin and gnaw at you.

If you want the bike then tell dad you would offer to pay for the parts (with receipts only) and agree to add something for the labor. Let dad tell doucheboy he thinks it is the right thing to do.

Ronbo 07-10-2019 11:00 AM

What insurance company would take action to pronounce the bike totaled and resell to someone else based on being contacted by a non-policyholder? Presumably FIL has not had discussions with the insurer at this point.

I have seen this too, unfortunately.

If it was a pan or a knuckle, I'd be hot, but otherwise I'd let it go.

71T Targa 07-11-2019 09:18 AM

I am not looking forward to the day we're having to settle an estate. I know this is just a gimps of what is to come.

When the time comes and my mom passes, the only thing I'll want is a few more minutes with her.

crb07 07-11-2019 10:47 AM

on page two and still nothing about the fate of the deer? Am I the only one who wants to know?
