Any gamers? This one, is going to be a problem for me

I rarely, if ever game anymore, no time. I miss it a lot. I was hankering to break out the steering wheel and pedals and do some laps with Gran Tourismo yesterday. By the time I had everything done it was after 9PM and I did not want to get started.

My older son is a gamer and mentioned a crazy game he is playing called The Forest.

If you know about minecraft, you know there is a survival mode where you have to survive using resources around you to build a camp / home, harvest food etc.. you have to put some thought into it and plan out your moves accordingly.

I like that stuff. My son said The Forest is like that except much more realistic.

I logged into my steam account last night (I actually remembered the password) and downloaded the game. I spent about 70 minutes on it. (I think it is on PS4 too)

I survived my first day, barely. My problem is I am quickly realizing this game could be a huge time waster, I do not have a lot of that lately.

But boy!! Is it fun!! I was really immersed last night, my real world problems were not even a thought. I may party hard tonight and put in a couple more hours.

My son plays multiplayer with his GF, and a couple of their friends in Multi-player co-op mode and have a fortress on an Island built. Geeky I know, but man, it is fun.

If it allows you to forget the stresses of your day, you aren’t wasting time!

Just a bit. Kid played it. I just texted him asking about The Forest.

I liked Nazi Zombies. I would hit the treasure chest and hope for a BAR and a Ray Gun. Before that, in the 90's I did burn time with Doom on the PC.

Any Call of Duty/Halo play vs a youngster was pathetic. If I saw them, I was dead within a second. So slow. You need to burn that skill in when you are under 10. I did ok against the machine on moderate level but never a skilled human.

I love gaming, mainly for that reason, put your cares aside and have fun. Love the Halo franchise, World of Tanks, Roboleague and of course racing.

My kids are too good for me though :)

The guy that lives across the street from my BIL is 80ish years old and plays Call of Duty, sometimes up all night smack talking 10 years olds. We laugh that he is gaming at that age and think it is awesome.

Have 2 sons that game (one 26 other 15) I have played them all and like you in the 90's was a big time Wolfenstein / Doom /Quake / Duke Nukeem player.

I did the whole Halo thing wiht my older son when he was younger and recently the entire Destiny thing with my younger son.

When Minecraft was beta testing I purchased 3 copies for myself and my 2 sons, we were all on there together building things and surviving. Buying it back then granted you lifetime access to the game, we can still log in and play today all these years later. All for $60 invested 10 years ago +/-

About a year ago I purchased and downloaded the Wolfenstein reboot game on Steam and really enjoyed it, took about a week to beat it. This one however seems to be really complicated and involved, I can tell it will be a huge time investment. I guess just go at my own pace it will always be there when I want it.

Yes rwest - I agree, if it takes my mind off day to day stress then I am for it.

World of tanks Is fun. Old roomie had a projector and he would play on one side of the wall in the barracks. Got old at night though.

Sounds similar to Left for Dead. The kids and I do that coop sometimes. There is a good adrenaline rush in a survival type game. Fortnite is another build and survive game, but I haven't played that one.

Bob, we have LAN parties now and then and we set the young kids off in a separate room against us older people with our own dedicated server. In the games that required coordination and teamwork, the teens got owned every single time. Of course, some of the older people actually served. On maps with aircraft we had two good pilots. They had a bunch of mediocre pilots. I was flying a Hind-D and my gunner shot down a Harrier and an A-10 because we knew how to use the terrain and they flew around like pigeons. The young guys have quick reflexes and good twitch muscles, but they have to see you to kill you. We used to do the same thing to them in airsoft.

Jim, which wheel do you have? There are a lot of good racers for the PC as well.

varmint 07-12-2019 12:15 PM

Winters are long and dark. Finally got a decent connection. But I have the same problem. Just don’t have the reflexes to compete with ten year olds in halo. Tired of fetch quests and twenty hours of gathering junk to build stuff is unappealing. World of tanks is more my speed.

Or turn based strategy.

The kids and I talked dad into playing Far Cry with us. We told him to stand behind these sandbags and shoot everyone that comes from that direction. Same thing in Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Told him stand by the hostage and shoot anyone that comes your way. He also likes driving the dirt ovals on the computer as well. He used to do that for real back in the day. He likes pinball too now that he found that on Steam. Mom on the other hand...

It sounds like fun, but I don't have the time. I have played lots of stuff over the years, but nothing in many, many years now.

I do miss being able to play something like NFS - Porsche Unleashed or Grand Prix Legends or what was the more modern one that was initially shareware and installed on top of an F1 game, GT something?

Slightly off topic. Used to suit up in heavy winter clothes with young boys on the deck with paintball guns. I would run from behind a tree to hide behind another but right in front of them. Like 15 feet. Was worth catching one in the thigh to hear those kids squeal.

Good times.

I did love Left for Dead.

flipper35 07-12-2019 12:52 PM

A friend of mine was reaching up over a grain bin, no glove, and took a paintball on the fingernail. Said that has to be one of the worst places to get hit with a paintball.

Steve, Grand Prix Legends is still one of the most difficult to drive fast. Awesome game.

stealthn 07-12-2019 01:07 PM

Gotta fix my driving rig now that you guys got me thinking about it :)

F1 is great with a full setup

Jims5543 07-13-2019 12:57 PM

I decided to do an experiment in the game and not strike nor harm any of the cannibals for as long as possible. See if they would just leave me alone.

I lasted 8 days. On the 8th day I had started building defenses.

Backing up, on day one a lone cannibal was watching me from a distance. On day 2 he came closer and closer still on day 3 where he attacked me, I defended / blocked and backed away finally retreating to my tree house that he could not access, they cannot climb ropes.

Day 4 and 5 multiple cannibals came by, I retreated fast and avoided confrontation.

Bringing me back to day 8, I decided to build walls around my tree house and I also built a trap with spikes that would kill an intruder.

I was chopping down a tree at dusk thinking I should really be inside as they always visit at dusk. Just as I fell the tree I looked up to see about 6 of them in the path of the falling tree. While it will not kill them it will piss them off. They chased me to my tree house and one was killed in my trap.

All hell broke loose. They ran around under me (walls not done) in my treehouse screaming.

The next morning I left camp built a raft and paddled around the island to a yacht offshore I saw while exploring. I spent the night there thinking that may take the heat off my camp.

Wrong! 20 of them showed up the following evening ready to rumble.

This is where I saved and stopped. I am debating my next move. My water situation is bad and food is running low. So I have to either fortify the place fast or move far to another part of the Island.

To be continued.

Are survival guides worth anything this deep into it?

varmint 07-13-2019 02:56 PM

Relocate.

The next time you run into a solo cannibal kill cook and eat him. Wear his skin. Just go ugly early and get it over with.

john70t 07-13-2019 03:52 PM

You might like DayZ but it's more of a multiplayer game with many possibilities.
The maps are huge so it could get boring otherwise.
(Kinda like a Walking Dead vidya game.)

Yes, many you tube videos and there is a wiki page as well as a website that mapped out the island.

You can actually do this. The game keeps track of your health and mental stability. Right now I am 100% sane, I suspect wearing skin may drop that.

I don't like The Forest. It's quite a bad representative of the survival genre. Any game is good if you play with friends though. I prefer single player games. I ordered recently Cyberpunk 2077. Hopefully, the collector's edition will arrive at me in Austin https://worldpostalcode.com/united-states/texas/austin on time. At this point, the game looks awesome.
