How long did you lurk before joining the circus?

Me....mebbe 8 months...found this one years later ;)...

Close to a year. I had searched some tech articles then stumbled onto this.
18 years of various experiences.

I was traveling for work and waiting for a flight in LAX. I bought an Excellence magazine. It had a buyer's guide for either SC or 3.2L (or maybe both) in 1999. I found and joined the Rennlist email list pretty quickly and bought a 911 shortly thereafter and was on Rennlist (email) for 1-2 years. Then I switched to PelicanParts. I was over on the 911 tech side for about 4 years and then sold the 911 and moved to OT.

Not long at all after finding the good tech advice, articles. Initially I thought a bunch of guys ( mostly) 'talking' online was gay.........just sayin. That was early 2004. Almost immediately I was struck by the diversity and personalities of everyone here. Been a daily presence since.

Like most, I started in the 911 Tech section. Heck, I still go there to read and post some. Mostly about on the AC threads. Since I still work on my 911 myself I even ask questions and look through the vast archive of knowledge.

After several years I stumbled into the OT area and found the brain trust and knowledge on every subject possible. I have always had multiple computers at my desk even when I had a normal job. Now I own my own business and have three computers at my desk.

I get on of them going on a project and it may take 20 minutes or 20 hours to run a project. I use one of the other computers to peruse OT. I also check in with TapaTalk on my phone if I am away from my computers and stuck somewhere waiting. This forum is 95% of the social media I play with.

2 years. Found PP in '14 when I was looking for a Cayman. Checked OT pretty much every day for 2 years before I logged on. Good people here.

When I was in a position were no one was looking over my shoulder to see what I was doing. :D

As a computer tech; if I was looking at a screen I was working. So I was signed up on all sorts of forums. Before Pelican was born I was on the PCA Potomac forum. A nice bunch but a bit dry compared with us.

I now realized I musta lurked at least 18 months. It began when I got a wild hair for a 928....always had nice cars, but no car guy. Lurked on RL...eventually found Pelican Tech. The idea of owning a 911 (and DIYing) had never crossed my mind. Just reading the help offered, the wealth of knowledge, willingness to share....the search was on. Six months every day, RL, here, everywhere....found it...

Joined the circus when I had a question a week or so later.....

Buncha clowns ;)

That would be about 10 years for me starting on the 914 boards with my 914 race car.

The last 911 in the stable went home in 2012.

I first posted in the 914 technical forum.

I ventured into PPOT 2 years, 9 weeks, 6 days, and 50 minutes later.

I had a BMW convertible first then a SC before I found Pelican. I think that’s how it went but it’s been so long ago that I forget.

sammyg2 07-16-2019 03:40 PM

Ah, my first peek at PPOT.
it was back in two thousand aught one if I remember correctly.

There was a guy over in the tech forum named todd static or something like that and he had a gazillion posts.
I asked how does one amass 10,000 posts, and why doesn't he have a life? it just seemed hard to believe a person could rack up that many.

He said something about how easy it is to make lots of posts in OT, so I checked it out.

Don't ever do that.

McLovin 07-16-2019 04:41 PM

I started posting here and in 911 Tech in June 1998!

Different name back then.

I think I lurked on Tech for six months before joining to be able to ask questions. Don't remember exactly when I found OT, but I remember it was when I was checking out all of the forums out of curiosity. I've never been a prolific poster on tech or here, in fact I'm amazed I have as many postings as I do.

I originally signed up around '97 or '98 I think but my membership was not approved for some reason. I joined 914 World for tech, then bought a 911SC and then a 3.2 911 around 2001. I met Gabe, who started a Porsche parts business called Strasse, and I was one of his first customers from 2001 to 2005. I tried to join Pelican again around 2004. My friend who already joined Pelican and owned a 911 told me about OT and that it was "weird". I posted a lot in 911 Tech after that until I just got tired of the noisy hoi polloi ignoring a lot of the solid advice. I liked the more thoughtful discussions in OT. I post a lot less now though. Life seems a lot more busy and hectic because it probably is. So to answer the question, about ten years.

ckelly78z 07-17-2019 12:55 AM

I think I looked this site up for a few parts that I needed for my original 1983 Porsche 944, and found the forums, had a few laughs, and joined right away.

KFC911 07-17-2019 02:34 AM

Who remembers the "chip warz".... methinks Loren had CDS or SWDS or somethin'...my Carrera ain't grenaded yet tho' ;)

Tech seems like a lifetime ago...it wuz :)!
