Well technically not a Soviet launch. If successful This will be the first deep space mission coming out of Kazakhstan (the main Russian launch facility) since the Soviet days.

There were a number of attempts since the breakup of the Soviet Union but they all failed. Most Notably the Phobos-Grunt mission which was to return a soil sample from the Mars moon Phobos. It never left earth orbit and burned up during reentry to the Earth.

Good luck to the Russians, but in my humble opinion, no one matches NASAs science achievements/discoveries.

Other Soviet Firsts;
First photo of the moon’s far side 1959
First Space Walk 1965
First Soft Landing on other celestial body (moon) 1966
First one-two-and three man capsule
Longest time in space 748 days
First woman in space 1962
First dog in space Laika (not the first monkey though that was Albert II US- Able the first to actually survive)

The first living organisms to go into space were fruit flies 1948, launched on a recovered German V2 Rocket (US)

They are credited by some for the first successful landing on another planet, Mars (Mars 3 - 1971) Though it likely achieved a soft landing, the lander stopped transmitting after 14.5 seconds and returned a partial image of no scientific value.

Just an FYI
