Keeping Windows Clean

Whenever I clean Mustang, the windows are perfectly clean inside and out when I'm done. But a day or two later, they tend to pick up dust on the outside in what were previously unseen spots and swirls on the glass. If I clean a window in a circular pattern, two days later dust will make the pattern visible. Similarly, on the inside, after about a week, a film will start to accumulate that makes any cleaning patterns visible. If I drive with my windows open, a pattern will show up the next day on the inside windows. I end up cleaning the glass about every two days. It's like the glass has a static charge that just attracts dust. Anyone ever dealt with this and know of any tricks? This is my only vehicle with this strange issue.

I experience the same thing.

Outside: Clean with Invisible Glass (a ton better than regular glass cleaner) and newspaper twice. Windshield gets two coats of Rain-X (let dry between coats). After buffing it out, I sprinkle a few drops of water and buff with a cheap microfiber towel.

Inside: Out-gassing of plastic causes film. Clean 2 or 3 times using Invisible Glass and newspaper. Clean top of dash and other plastic surfaces to get dust off. If you smoke, all bets are off.

If you buff vertically outside and horizontally inside, you will be able to tell if a streak is inside or out.

IMO, paper towels and regular glass cleaner just don't cut it.

Yes, I'm concerned about being able to clearly see the crowd before I hit them.

Don't clean in circular pattern. Wipe straight, vertical and horizontal, and you will not see swirls as much. You can do it like Joe suggests, vertical on one side, horizontal on the other, so you can tell where the streaks are, then clean perpendicular to whatever direction you did it on the first pass.

+1 on using newspaper

I put Rain-X on all the windows, not just the windshield.

Best reply I’ve seen all week! 🤣🤣🤣

What’s “newspaper?”

john70t 07-17-2019 12:45 PM

My hands were always more tinted than the windows after using a stack of newspaper.
The soy based ink did perk up the moobs though.

Glass cleaner got expensive for me when I installed replacement windows for a living. Unlike most installers, I washed the windows at the end of the installation. I thought why would the homeowner want a bunch of manufacturer stickers on their new windows. On that subject, you'd be surprised. ;)

So I made my own. Start with a gallon of distilled water (not necessary but it makes the final wipe really clean). Add one ounce of ammonia, one ounce of white distilled vinegar, one ounce of isopropyl alcohol, a thimble of Simple Green (or other similar, but it has to be as nasty as SG is) and a dozen drops of liquid detergent.

Now there are 2 million recipes that are similar so just take the idea in stride and make some with what you have on hand. Mine would cut the factory oils on the first go round, and with a new towel it would do a perfect job the second time. Yes, wipe in different directions inside vs. out.

For me, if I saw streaks or smudges, I did it one more time and if they were still there in the sun it was time to call for a glass change out on warranty. That happened a few times and I was able to show the rep that there was no way the exterior surfaces weren't 'squeaky' clean.

The video that Rickysa posted is what I've been using the last couple years. The MagicErasers work really well to get rid of the film on the interior glass.

They also make a woven microfiber for glass cleaning that works well. I use them with Griot’s Garage glass cleaner and it gets rid of the streaks and swirls. Make sure you wipe with the wet side and then dry with the dry side.

This worked like a charm. I've never had cleaner glass.

Maybe it's a Mustang thing? I also use invisible glass. Good stuff. Often wonder if rain-x adds to the problem on the outer surface?

Bartenders friend works well, then vinegar and water
