So many questions about my new-to-me '96 softail.

Sometimes things work out... In this case I've been able to come up with a workable solution and am now the proud owner of a '96 Heritage Classic Softail.

I am still putting some of the pieces back together and have a tone of questions. I know that in asking them here I'll get some valuable information so here goes!

1st the front fender is in pretty bad shape. I think my options are to buy used in okay shape, or buy new and have it painted to match. I'm leaning towards the first with something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Harley-1997-flstc-Heritage-softail-silver-red-front-fender/401656673990?hash=item5d849a76c6:g:e~IAAOSw7R9cEnh 6#shpCntId
Thoughts?

2nd, I am trying to track down this part:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1563909615.jpg
It's the washer or set of washers that go on top and below the mounting bracket. Since I don't know what it's called, I'm having a hard time finding one (two actually). :D
And on the subject of these lights, how should they be adjusted? I assume their purpose is like a fog light and they should be pointed just right of center?

3rd, the ODO LCD is crap. I've been searching for replacement options with mixed results. Anyone with experience here? Do I need to replace the entire speedo?

And a quick shot of the bike in question.

It is a swivel block and the HD part # is 68721-62 the flat washer is PN # 6072

Also to tighten the bolts I used a 1/2" deep well socket that I cut a notch into so the cord can sit outside of the socket. Kind of like a O2 sensor socket.

Dave

I added a connector the the wire so I could tighten the nut and then connect the wire.

I would continue to search for a used fender that is a pretty popular bike and a popular color. That fender on ebay looks kind of beat up. I think you will find one in very good condition and the paint will match much better than having a new one painted

I was gonna say the same thing but you beat me to it. No, honest!

Great advice. I might add that if worst comes to worst and you simply cannot find a matching fender, I would recommend buying a used HD fender and painting it over buying an aftermarket fender and painting it. Aftermarket sheet metal is notoriously crappy for these things. Any decent paint shop has all of the Harley paint codes, so it wouldn't be hard to match. Besides, the fender is far enough away from the tank that you can get away with a bit more than on a car.

Your "passing lights" (that's the official name, just don't ask me why) can be aimed for whatever it is that is your preference. Stock wiring only allows them to stay on with the low beam - flipping the high beam on shuts them down. You can get a harness kit that allows them to stay on with the high beam, but there really isn't any point in doing that. They are really kind of "low speed" lighting, without the range of the high beam anyway.

I like to aim mine so that they broaden the area that is lit up in front of me. I like to call them "ditch lights", and aim them so that they are out on the outside edges of the headlight beam on the left and right, overlapping enough so it is one constant level of illumination all the way across, with no dark spots between the main headlight beam and the passing light beams. Same height as the headlight, so the left one doesn't shine in oncoming drivers' eyes.

Thanks, I did wonder about the aftermarket stuff.

Again, appreciate the input from the brain trust.
