NC, Southern Virginia in September

We are looking for a place on the beach to get away for a few days. Southern Virginia and North Carolina are about a day's drive. Any suggestions on where to go? We just want to hang on the beach and take it easy after a busy summer.

When the kids are finally back in school, and the weather is still decent, but not overly hot, is a good time to go. I don't necessarily have any destination in mind, but arguably the best time of the year for traveling, barring any wayward hurricane/tropical storms.

Just go on Google Earth and find yourself a hotel with an oceanfront pool and contact Trivago... get an oceanfront room on about the 5th floor.

You're welcome.

I hate to say this....hate those damn oval stickers on the back of carz....it wuz ruined the day the northern route opened decades ago...go after the summer crazies leave.

OBX....rent one of the old beach houses protected by dunes....that's still standing.

The daze of my memories are long gone....depressing to go back in a sense.

But it is the place you seek ...

If you are willing to head a little south from nags head, places like Salvo and Avon on the outer banks are good to look into. Driving over the bridge and down through pea island is always a nice drive. It's a thin strip of sand where you can see water on both sides. A very different feel than nags head.

obligatory pic:

There are some places where you feel like the road is lower than the water. It gets washed out in storms. People collect to get pics of the sunset over the sound in droves. This is more isolated than Nags Head, so if you are looking into eating out someplace different every night, that might be a challenge.

Yes to both suggestions above. Avoid Kitty Hawk and Nags-either go to Southern Shores to the north (an older community where you can rent something other than a flood insurance sucking mcmansion) or south of Oregon Inlet.
If you like to fish, the offshore fishing out of Oregon is pretty awesome.

We go to the Outer Banks only because they are convenient. After Labor Day, the Sanderling on Duck is the best place to stay.

But if you want “beach” and not “ocean”, go to any of the Brunswick County (NC) beaches or south to Pawley’s Island, SC. Litchfield is by far our favorite.

We've been going over to Atlantic Beach (Morehead City) in Sept. for a few years. It's a very laid back, non-high-rise kind of place, basically residential, family oriented. Beautiful beaches, sort of forgotten and undiscovered by the modern world.

4x4 permits for the beach are the cats meow. We used to got out to the point and fish, swim, and collect shells. This is a really cool place, where two different currents meet.
This place is not all that far from the lighthouse . The southern end of the island, still feels older, and not all run over by corporate america, but it is closing in slowly .
It is pretty awesome that you can load your cooler up, take your fishing gear, and drive out to places like this .

We usually go 2nd week of September and stay near Kill Devil Hills besides beach road. As it is just ghetto enough to be fun but roughly in the middle of the whole area.

Unfortunately, we're not going this year, spending the money on our home, replacing some worn-out appliances. When we do go next year, I'll PM you

In the 60s....that would have been s lot of vehicles...combined both north and south....walk forever ...mebbe see a lone fisherman...

The road north just stopped ....4x4s ....as a teen, my CJ5 drove on a buncha beaches...legally, no permit needed off season, but on NC/SC beaches....not at the OB.

I'm gonna be fishin' outta Morehead early Oct. You guys should talk to Rick if fishin' is yer thing

Further south there is hippy couple that rents out dune buggy's for the day - the Myers Manx style. Some years ago they would rent 24hrs / overnight - which is when we rented one. We both loved it, lots of fun for not a lot of dough.
Not sure why but they only rent for a day now.

Southern Va means Virginia Beach south...you'd have to drive through VB to get to the Eastern Shore. Not worth the effort.

I have spent time on the East Coast. Hatteras is good, OBX in September has charm.

I prefer, as suggested earlier, Atlantic Beach. New Bern is a great town, have dinner there or stay there and drive to the beach for the day...I flew out of Cherry Point enough to get smart about where to go.

Pawley's Island, SC seems more your style, frankly, probably worth the extra hour or two in the car.

I have also stayed in Myrtle Beach in the off season...if you push your trip into October, the deals are great.

Just got back from Salter Path and it is just what I needed.

I hated the beach until my wife started planning trips to the Atlantic Beach area.

If you're looking for a nice quiet place to just sit, drink and enjoy, I'll ask my brother where he stayed at VA beach. I remember he and his wife really liked this place but I don't recall where it was. I've been to OBX several times, quiet? not so much Last time I was there we got a beachfront house and I liked that better than the places we had stayed before about 2 rows off the beach. Less walking to get to my beer in the fridge.

Just talked to my brother. He and his wife stayed in Cape Charles VA. He said it was on the Sound side so the water was shallow and warm, but it was a nice quiet place.
