Loved it! Thanks.. Guys, you should watch this. So lucky it wasn't tragic..

Certainly a very talented pilot to pull off stunts like that so close to the ground and not crash it. A bit staged perhaps.

One thing lead to another and I had a few too many cocktails and then went onto the wine. Not a good idea.

Knowing I was over the limit, I decided to leave my car at the pub and took a bus home.

Sure enough, I passed a police checkpoint, where they were pulling over drivers and performing breathalyzer tests. Because I was in a Bus they just waved it past.

I arrived home safely and without incident, which was a real surprise as I've never driven a bus before and I am not even sure where I got it from

Almost every airshow has an act like this. Always amusing.

Zeke 08-01-2019 07:45 AM

He's good but I bet scraping the wing tip was unintended and risky. Certainly didn't do the aircraft any good.

Kyle Franklin, son of the infamous airshow pilot and consummate showman, Jimmy Franklin. Sadly, Jimmy and Bobby Younkin lost their lives in a midair collision at an airshow some years ago. Among two of the BEST stick and rudder pilots I have ever seen perform. Matt Younkin, Bobby's son, now performs in the family Twin Beech. Search YouTube for him - he has some great in cockpit video. Kyle married, Amanda Younkin, who was his wing walker. They had an engine failure a few years ago and she died as a result of her injuries. Poor guy has had a lot of pain in his young life. The apples don't fall far from the tree in the case of Kyle and Matt - inherited the stick and rudder gene from their fathers. They just performed at AirVenture and were fantastic as usual.

"Give him a short, sharp shock, and he won't do it again."

I didn't know Amanda was from the Younkin family.

Very tragic. Kyle did a fantastic job setting the disabled airplane down in survivable fashion. Amanda suffered severe burns before getting out of the airplane. Spent the last days of her life in the burn unit.

He did it multiple times so probably part of hte act.

One of the German pilots from WW1 used to pick up a handkerchief from the ground with his plane's wingtip as part of a barnstorming show after the war.

t6dpilot 08-01-2019 12:02 PM

It is absolutely part of the act. I think the have dust creating skid plates on the wingtips.

Yup. We used to get a guy every year at out local EAA fly-in who did this. Maybe even the same guy. I checked out his airplane early one morning, and it did indeed have a couple of sacrificial blocks fastened to dedicated hard points at each wing tip. They looked like blocks of chalk or something like that.

t6dpilot 08-01-2019 12:37 PM

Yeah Jeff, I was thinking skid plate with a block of chalk too.

daepp 08-01-2019 01:08 PM

The guy did that stunt on at least one additional occasion.
