So, yes, 17-4 is "good enough", although needlessly expensive for what you want. But, hey, if he can get it, he can get it. It can be heat treated up to about Rockwell "C" of somewhere in the low 40's. Tell him to shoot for about 38-42 Rc and that should be "good enough". That should provide a good combination of hardness and toughness to where you can beat the hell out of it with your BFH for some time.

Thanks Jeff, I'll talk with them on Monday to see about price and timing. Price I'm not so worried about, time is more expensive than anything these days. Just bought some with a new assistant starting Monday to help with this project.

I hear you. That was very much our policy when I was designing tooling and equipment for AOG. Time was always the most important element - we very much had to learn to make do with what we could get. When an airline has a $250 million dollar piece of revenue generating equipment that is going to sit idle until we fix it, well, they can get a little impatient...

Yeah... lots of guys oh so eager to show off what they think they "know". More importantly, that what they "know" is superior to what someone else might "know". Coming in all full of bluster and bullschitt, eager to denigrate and put others down in some childish effort to feed their fragile egos, and ultimately only succeeding in coming off as pompous asses. .....

wait, is that you're doing now?

Oh crap, is that what am I doing now? :D

Well, simple me, I suggested a softer hammer or a press.

That's exactly what I'm doing now. Between piano lessons... ;)

That seems strange that the shop has 17-4 but not 4340. I probably have 4140, 4130, and 4340 laying around at work, but the only 17-4 I deal with is turbine blades and pump shafts. I think the CrMo steels are easier to heat treat too.

Shaun @ Tru6 08-17-2019 05:38 PM

I agree David. Dollars to donuts they have the 17-4 laying around that can be used up on what I need.

Been using the tooling for months now and it is perfect! Exactly what I needed, couldn't be happier with the steel. Big thanks to Jeff and everyone who helped.

This really needs a PICTURE of the tooling to be complete.

No pics until 2021. :)
