Very cool.
I happen to know of a famous chassis that is buried in ivy and is stripped bare just as that one was. It once looked like this: ![]() |

Great Story. I really like that kid telling the tale, and that photo at the end with Jim is freakin' priceless.

Wow...quite a story. A piece of autosports history I'm glad to have seen.

That is a great story. It took some vision to look at those rusty pieces and see a complete car. I’m glad they didn’t restore it.

Very cool story indeed! Awesome that this “younger” guy is helping to document and preserve the history.
Thanks for sharing the link. |

These are the men who built the sport. Many, many race cars were laid out in chalk on a garage floor, and built using the materials at hand. (The narrator mentions that Joe's previous digger used drive shafts as the main tubes....)
Joe was above average from his peers in his engineering prowess - witness the torsion bar front end.... But, yeah, in hindsight, so many things could have gone wrong....clutch, fuel, material stress and fatigue, weird harmonics, tire failure.......>shudder<

I always say I was born 20 years too late. I'm 47 and my Dad's generation grew up in a great time.....Hot Rod speaking. Cruising American Graffiti style could be seen every weekend.
My favorite car my Dad had was a 1956 Chevy that was an old drag car in Long Beach....I think. My Dad's best friend was in The Navy and brought the car back here to Ohio. Dad bought it. The car had a straight axle and a tilt front end. 4:11 gears and a 4-speed had that car winding at around 4000 rpms on the highway! I loved that car. The connecting rods as motor mounts were cool. Thanks for posting. Chris

Foster didn't own it, just drove it. Don Kirby built and owned it. It was formerly known as the (2nd) Corvette Auto Parts AA/FC but that business closed so Kirby sought out sponsorship to continue. The cars were never that successful. They won only a few. This was in the beginning days of the Snake and Mongoose.

Quote:
I think the part that resonates with me is that they didn't know they could fail or had limitations on speed or ET. As said above they home built it with the skills and resources they had and driven by the desire to go racing. It's been repeated many times in any kind of racing of that era safety was a concern but there were little guidelines or rules to go by, especially at small local tracks that were not sanctioned
