Note to seller, ditch the accent for the auctioneer!

No sale at $17 million? The classic car world is nuts!

Chris liked it.

The reserve was not met (after the debacle). From what I heard, all the potential buyers became a bit scared after that and stopped bidding. Speculation was that the reserve was somewhere around $20M. It's unfortunate for the seller, as the market is softening across the board.

I'd think that one of the job prerequisites for being an auctioneer is the ability to PRONUNCIATE.

The question remains; how was it bid up to 70M? The bid amounts were on the board. I think Sothebys has some 'splaining to do!

The Ferrari race car 0432M didn't sell at a 20 million bid at Monterey. Quite a car.

For some reason the fancy auctions like to employ foreigners, brits mostly, for the cute accent.... This time the foreign accent (was it dutch, I forgot) did not pan out - this is gonna leave a mark on the auction house name.

Isn't there also a controversy on the car - folks saying it's not really a porsche but more fair to call it a VW whose lines make it an ancestor to the 356... Either way, first world problems !

My understanding is the Porsche lettering is not original.

But again there is a Bid board directly over his head. The board clearly showed 70 million. So who bid from 30 to 70? Anyone? Or did Sothebys? I think this is a MAJOR blemish on the Sotheby's brand.

I suspect the person who controls the bid board was listening to the auctioneer for the actual amount bid and misunderstood what he saying, along with the rest of us.

it was interesting to hear the jeers and harrrrumphs from the snooty crowd, they were not pleased.

I would not be surprised if a lawsuit develops from this. I'd bet that Sotheby's seller's fees for this lot are toast, at a minimum.

Hard to say if this was just a big mistake, or a dishonest attempt to achieve a big number.

that auctioneer couldn't annunciate for crap.. Even after he corrected the 70 million to 17 million, it still sounded as if he was saying "seventy". One would think that as an auctioneer, this would be the most important skill to posses.
