Safest way to buy online ???

I'm looking at buying a motor from an out of State Seller and a little nervous about the transaction.

Therefore, I am looking for input on the best and safest way to do the transaction with an out of State seller. Any advice?

Thanks

Bob

buying on line?

The motor is at a small shop in New Jersey

online escrow... G&S paypal...

My last 928 S4 engine I bought online I paid with usps money order. P-car crowd seems to not be dirt bags.

I've only been burned once buying online. And it was my fault for not choosing the vendor's escrow as a way of payment....

Is the shop selling it?

Thanks for the great feedback. I might do a blast requesting someone in NJ swing by and confirm it's a real engine including correct serial numbers etc....

It's a modified 3ltr with JE Pistons e cams 993 studs coming out of a turbo tribute car being replaced with a 3.6. The price seems fair at 9500. I was introduced to the seller by a fellow Pelican subscriber but the motor was not advertised on this sit so I can't check his online reputation on this site. I requested leak down diagnostic.

Bob, if it's in central to northern NJ send me a pm, I might know the shop.

A couple of things speak to me about this very subject. MO - 1st - I would never buy an engine with-out seeing it run for at least a minute. That even applies to the guy down the street selling it. I've had just too many issues where I did not do this and ended up with crap.

Buying out of the area, a video of it running would go a long way. To me that's the greater risk than the monetary transaction.

Regarding that - depending on if it is a business or individual and the amount, I'd have different answers.

2) I would pay by......................

I sold and shipped a 3.2L and it's 915 tranny from Washington to S Carolina.

My 1982 SC was totaled front end from 82 year old grandma going wrong way on one way road.
Engine was massaged with lots of inner and outer goodies. God I loved those Web 20/21 cams and Monty Muffler.

sold to a fellow trusted long-tenured Pelican.

what worked for me:

Get a Banks Cashier Check .
send via USPS.
Take it to Bank.
Wait the 2-3 days for it to clear.

boom done

There are dirtbags every where. I know a few folks on the board have been scammed/burned by folks in the community. I think it's usually folks that aren't long-time regulars.

Many, many years ago, I bought a motor from a guy that was supposed to have been running when it was pulled. Turned out it had spun bearings. Fortunately for me, 1 it was really cheap and 2, the heads were good and I ended up needing those to go with another block.

Where in NJ is it located?

Ah, the good ol' days. Lots of parts selling amongst us fellow Pelicans with great results and only a few dirt bags that sneaked in posing as reliable sources. I don't see many of those look-out-for-this-guy threads these days but I don't visit the other forums much.

I got burned a couple times but not for much more than 75 bucks.

Get a Pelican member in NJ to go by the shop and do the deal face-to-face, pay that person for their time. The potential for getting screwed on a $9500 used motor, (plus shipping!), is unacceptable.

There are plenty of long time guys around here who are known in our community, Vinman is an example of someone I would trust w no limits and no one is going to try to screw him face-to-face. :)

^^^^ This. Years ago, I previewed an SC that another longtime bird purchased. Another Canadian was saved nuthin' but heartache ...just had to see it in person...and watch it run....RUN :(!
