Anybody else watching Hyperdrive on Netflix?

It's silly, but fun. It's a series of obstacle course races that require a lot of drifting. I'm having fun watching it with my two daughters, age 23 and 18. So that's a good thing.

flipper35 08-28-2019 12:20 PM

I saw the first episode. Other than the editing it wasn't too bad. Some of the drivers lost a lot of time drifting when they should have been driving the last part of the course. But that is half the fun of watching. Some have some pretty precise placement of their cars, others are all over the place and you wonder how they got invited.

It is silly. It reminds me of the obstacle course TV shows from Japan.

I was impressed with the good drivers in the first episode, but then you wonder how half of them got there when they cannot do a "Rockford turn" (always referred to as a 180 cap where I grew up), or the fact that water may negatively affect their engines.
They clearly had time for car prep after seeing the course, as the commentator mentioned the one guy putting sheet metal below his engine to divert water. Knowing that, how do dumbasses get to the starting line with their air intake 2 inches off the ground and not protected?

Shot in my home town and cars were worked on by one of our local Indy shops. I don’t like challenge type shows but I will eventually check it out

That’s Kodak in the background, remember them?

ckissick 08-28-2019 12:53 PM

I'd like to see how Ken Block does.

My brother in law is in it with his E92 drift car... I need to watch it so I can let him know... He actually helped setup the show - and I didn't even get to meet charlize, dammit...

What's his name? The only BMWs I remember are owned by a German couple.

Faruk. Can’t miss him - he breaks his car twice. Unfortunate as he is a hell of a drifter and probably would have done well. I’m not the target audience though - I feel old watching this :-) my scene is more “Ford vs Ferrari” - hoping that’s good !

I thought it would be a good way to bring in Tanner foust and queue the revival of American top gear

He's a far better driver than Ken block

Me too. Did you see The 24 Hour War? Loved that. It’s on amazon prime

GH85Carrera 08-29-2019 05:54 AM

So it is a TV show about drifting?

What's next, a show about burnouts? How to drive slow around a track? Oh I know, a show about driving on wet ice with bald tires. That would involve lots of drifting and sliding.

Thanks for the heads up, I will pass. DSDF

Not exactly, I wish ;-) It's a series of head to heads on silly courses all lit up in neon lights, you have to hit targets with the rear fender of the car, drift, do 180s or 360s in a box without hitting stuff, balance a car on a see-saw type ramp, all while racing the clock or another car... And puff pieces on the participants, which I know for a fact are bull**** (well very "curated", let's say). It's pure entertainment for a young crowd, not at all like racing, not geared towards us older farts. If anything it has more in common with drone racing or american ninja atmosphere, than "car anything". I'd never have watched the show past 5 minutes had I not known a participant.

I was rooting for Faruk since I'm also from SF. He was very good. Too bad his car broke.

Unwatchable.

I lasted 5 mins.

flipper35 08-29-2019 11:19 AM

It is better if you watch it muted. I have only seen through episode two and I am not sure I could watch more now. Rutledge going on about how unbelievable a 1000hp Lamborghini can drift? (All he really did was pull the handbrake and slide a bit into the target which can be done in a Geo Metro but I digress) They had to disconnect the front wheels from the drive line to do donuts well, but really? Has he not seen ANY rally race since the 80s where all wheel drive cars "drift" every corner? Or not heard of Ken Block, Tanner Foust, Travis Pastrana?

I guess if the target audience is the preteens from the Peoples Republic of Congo the commentary is great. Otherwise mute is a wonderful invention.

Pretty sure Rutledge has heard of Tanner Foust. They were on Top Gear USA together for 6 seasons, even if nobody watched it.

I watched the whole thing, well the last 3 or 4 episodes I had on in the background while doing other stuff.

Spoilers ahead.

First, that leveler was stupid. It could make or break your run, and it's not a skill I'd consider relevant to being a good driver/drifter. Failing that challenge cost you a lot more than the other challenges.

Second, water has no place in that show. After they almost blinded the German lady, I hope the producers figured it out. Nobody wants to see a car chug around with an intake full of water. If you want the cars to slide around more add some dirt.

I don't think they made the concept of the show known to all the contestants before the show. Or they brought in people to fill the field. The guy from Chicago in the Mercedes that took out targets with his door, he had no business being there. Mike Pettiford, he's a great SCCA racer and instructor, but he was out of his element there.

Dumb show/series.

Cheap filler tv. Wasn’t a fan.
My 8 year old liked it. He watches people playing Minecraft videos on YouTube voluntarily. You get the idea...

Dumb show/series.

It was my attempt at displaying how stupid Rut sounds when commentating. Anything with a handbrake can kick the back end out to hit a target. I honestly have to mute it to watch it.

Some of the obstacles make sense, the Rockford turn and linking the drifts to other targets but they should have also had a better technical section. Maybe hit a button with the front tires on a road course section or something instead of the water thing. Or like you said, a Rallycross section. I am only a few episodes in as I lack the mental incapacity to watch it too often, but it is like those Walmatian pictures. Eventually you have to take another peek.

pretty dumb, but I enjoyed watching it in the background. There are really no mainstream car shows geared towards real car enthusiasts. Even in the best times for UK top gear it was more entertainment than informative.

Its been a while now, but as far as car shows go it doesn’t get much better than Victory By Design.
