Brandi Carlisle The Hiwomen Talk about female singers.... |
As impressive as Grace Slick, at least to me...

Love Shirley! She's 52 now. Amazing how time flies. |

Linda was good, too. Always a favorite of mine. Saw her live in her prime, as I did with Grace, thought Grace was the better singer live. Would have been happy to go home with either of them. Quote:
Dolly has has a lot of success but, as nice a person as she is, I couldn't listen to her for long. Not my cup of tea, at all. As for the rest of you, this thread isn't a debate about who's the best female vocalist of all time. It's just as chance to listen to a track that none of us have ever heard and to appreciate for a few minutes the talent that one person had. I'm not aware of any formal voice training she had and she came of age in an era where that sort of coaching was relatively rare, compared to today. It was also before they invented all of the band-aids available to the modern vocalist. I thought the recording was very interesting and worth a listen. Ya wanna worship your own gods, hit that new thread button. |

If you isolate the singer from the Garbage video you will find a rather average voice singing with a band. Nothing special. Are there talented singers out there today? Probably, but the majority are just average talent with an attitude and auto-tune.
Take out the band, visual show, effects, and enhancements there isn't much left. Who from 1999 forward compares to Grace, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell? |
Nobody compares to Grace, Joan, Joni, et al. These are different times, the world is moving faster and instead of mellow moods, we wake up every day stressed out. The music has changed and the singers have changed to match. I like women vocalists that have an edge, like Shirley, from Garbage or maybe some of this:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KUmZp8pR1uc" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/aTzXNSJeDBA" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
And some more. This music has depth and power. In My Humble Opinion. Your Mileage May Vary.

Consider checking out her Grammy show performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJqL1yIm9e0 |
Check out Cass Elliot in the audience getting blown away along with everyone else at the MPF as Janis leaves every little piece of her heart on the stage in this epic version of Ball and Chain.

Thank you! Thank you all! That was great!

That said, I guess I still have to state again that the point of this thread wasn’t to debate who the best singer was, even though the thread title might suggest something along those lines. It was simply to encourage you to listen to a vocal track that I don’t think you’d ever hear anywhere else, and that I found to be pretty amazing. If you knew how many things were manipulated in vocal tracks now, that probably (or definitely) were not available in the 1960s, I think you’d understand where I’m coming from. |

There are a lot of vocalists who have had quite a bit of success, without having what I consider a very good voice. Cat Stevens comes to mind, as does Rod Stewart. Music is funny in that way. |
Natalie Merchant does "it" for me....
And I get why ya posted the thread too ;) Linda adorned my dorm room door.... wif them puppy dawg eyes :) |

Alanis - You Oughta Know - Jagged little pill Joan Jett - saw her live last year, still got "it" great performance. |

God forbid someone should enlighten them that it’s even worse than auto tune, all of their modern heroes have comped vocal tracks. |

Ok, gimmy a break, it was 38 years ago, so the details get fuzzy. I had not even thought about it until MTV playing music videos was mentioned. |

Music for the digital age I guess. I admit, we have MP3s on a flash drive in the car. Doesn't bother me. |
Teenage boys, their dads, who knows? I think a big component of her fan base now is gay men, for whatever reason.
As for MP3’s, I’ve never owned a single one. I’ve never owned an iPod, never downloaded a song, I’ve got absolutely no music on my iPhone and none of my audio systems will play an MP3. I occasionally watch a YouTube video on my computer, God help me. |
As much as I do not care for Christina Aguillera, she has a phenomenal voice. I remember seeing her singing on some local morning program in Pittsburg when she could not have been more than 10 or 12 years old. The big sound that came out of that tiny little kid was just amazing to me.

A lot depends on how blunted your memory of the past is, possibly combined with not watching as much news when younger compared to having the free time to do it today. |
I remember hearing Lea Ann Rymes (sp?) at 11 sing “Blue” the first time. I couldn’t believe a little kid could sing like that.
