In case you were wondering what all the hubbub was about...

It's now been officially withdrawn but I wouldn't be surprised if it gets through at some point.

"Intense debate among lawmakers and growing public protests have focused on a proposal by the Hong Kong government for a bill that would amend the city’s extradition laws.

The bill was tabled to close a loophole that has allowed a Hong Kong murder suspect to avoid being sent back from Taiwan.
But opponents fear it could be used to allow extradition between Hong Kong and mainland China, which critics say lacks a strong enough legal system"

You know you have effed up as a Govt. when people want their European colonizers back...

The HKers fear that the extradition laws would include political protest or ideas... Many HK people left HK before the transfer back to the PRC. Many established dual citizenship in new countries. With the British Commonwealth being an easy access destination. That is why Canada had a large influx of Chinese in the 90's. Let alone the US.

The PRC with it's new "Social Credit" system to reward or punish thought or behavior is creating a Borg mentality...Say a word of criticism about the government and you get your testicles zapped with a current of electricity...as a little reminder that you should think positive thoughts about government policy...Any organization as a human endeavor is going to make mistakes where criticism is a useful tool to correct mistakes as well as let people vent their frustration with the system. Barring allowing criticism leads eventually to the failure of the system as people will stop supporting the system with indifference if nothing else. In the Soviet the saying was, "The government pretends to pay us and we pretend to work."

Then there is that innovation and creativity is the realm of people who do not quite fit into the box. That can think beyond the herd or borg mentality. Those people are the ones who do things differently and sometime it works really really well.

Taiwan wants nothing to do with the draconian mainland PRC.

President JI was very wise in not sending in his military forces into HK. He would have soiled his own nest if he had done so, as the consequences of his actions would have had a detrimental effect on HK's viability as a global center of commerce..

Better to let the wayward child run especially if he is profitable to you. That is an old Chinese proverb that I just made up.
