GT500 racing stripes, $10k option

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a29020612/2020-ford-mustang-shelby-gt500-racing-stripes/

Hahaha

This definitely sounds like an option for Paul!

Quote:
Want to inflate the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500's $73,995 base price by 14 percent with only one option? Buy the optional painted-on racing stripes, of course! They cost $10,000, which seems, um, decadent for a non-performance-enhancing feature on a pony car's option sheet.

But wait, you might be asking: What's the going rate for factory-applied stripes these days? The GT500's option sheet provides insight by way of its available stick-on vinyl stripes, which run $1000. On the less powerful GT350, those same vinyl stripes cost $495. Curious what the 1000 percent markup for the GT500's painted-on versions was all about, we reached out to Ford for clarification.

Expensive but "painted on" is a lot more work hence the gouge.

Learning from Porsche how to pad an options list?

That's what I was thinking.

Maybe if they would do vantablack stripes for $10k, I could almost see it if you had mucho disposable income. It would be an interesting effect.

Hell, you could probably get vinyl stripes applied 10-20 times for that price.

Granted, painted stripes would be better than vinyl or decal, but I'm not sure $10k better when the base price is ~$75k.

I think everyone understands the sentiment here but getting stripes perfectly placed and put down isn't as easy as it sounds. Great stripes make a car look great. Not great stripes make it look like a high-schooler owns the car. The difference between great and WTF isn't much.

The Ford GT had a Gulf livery option in 2006 that cost $13,000. I thought that was pretty silly at the time, but those cars have doubled in price, so I guess I'm the dumb one.

I think I would go with the 10 times cheaper vinyl option if I wanted stripes. It doesnt sound that crazy in a world with 1200 exhaust tips though.

My exige came with black applied stripes. I am not sure if they were factory applied or if the rust owner did them but you can tell they are applied if you look very closely. Back 1 ft or so, they might as well be painted.

I have been meaning to remove them........................since October of 2011.

What do they mean "non performance enhancing"?? Everyone knows racing stripes increase horsepower and decrease your 0-60 time!

Here in Ohio we recognize it as part of “The Kentucky Go-Faster” performance package.

I just bought a 2019 kona blue GT with the performance package. I Had a body shop install them and they came out nice. Hard to tell the difference from 10 feet away

I'd rather get the GT400 stripes and save the money
