Ya gotta be kidding me....

Investigators are disassembly Kevin Hart's 1970 muscle car to determine what safety features will need to be implemented in ALL vintage or classic cars regardless of period correct equipment. What BS !

"Kevin's wreck shook Dr. Phil ... he showed us his classic, souped-up 1957 Chevy, which is equipped with lap belts but no safety harnesses, and he's now thinking about installing the harnesses and also plans to inquire about airbags."

Our hobby is about to come to a screeching halt.

This. It will be a challenge (impossible) to convince me that every old car has to be upgraded to current standards. It is essentially impossible. How can anyone add ABS, traction control, airbags, and the other modern nannies to a classic car.

They have never even retro-mandated seat belts for cars produced without. I seriously doubt one incident will change that.

Agreed. Retrofitting Airbags, ABS or TC would be prohibitively expensive for any car that couldn't have systems bolted on from a newer car. Ie, maybe if you had a 1995 X car, and those things were fitted to the X car in 1996, then you could maybe bolt a bunch of crap on.

Trying to add airbags, module and sensors in old cars would not only be expensive, but also highly unlikely to work as expected without extensive engineering which is not going to happen.

One of two things can happen, 1, nothing or 2 any old vehicle that doesn't have required safety items is outlawed. Then only outlaws will have cool cars.

I think it would be the insurance companies that may kill these resto mod cars. If your car is new except the body then when does the car stay old or become a new car with the new car regulations?

How about introducing some educational documentaries on safe driving instead.

The problem is when does it change? You put on an aftermarket air filter and cold air intake, do you now have to change other aspects of the car.

Then there's the issue of home built cars which usually don't have to adhere to various standards other than things like lights, horn, windshield wipers and mirrors, I think.

That's crazy talk. The FBI and DHS will be by to talk to you shortly. Don't mind the black helicopters.

That seems like a reasonable assumption.

The idea is to get rid of the old rusty dinosauers.

Both of my cars, the 911 and the El Camino have agreed value insurance. The insurance company know exactly what I have and the condition they are in.

You have to understand this wreck happened in California

California tends to infect the rest of the country with lunacy...

They are saying that vintage and classic cars , not just restomods will have to be compliant. IF they decide the vehicles pose a danger to the occupants due to lack of safety equipment. 5 point harness and roll bars were mentioned in the article I read. A roll bar without a helmet in far more dangerous IMO

A roll bar on a street car is not a prudent thing to have.

I don’t see it happening. How about a Ferrari GTO? Are they going to insist the owner who paid 35 million for his car completely alter its originality and kill its value? Destroy a Van Gogh?

They’d have to make big usage changes. The GTO, for example, would be limited to a small number of “exhibition” miles per year. Same with your Barracuda.
