Ice pilots NWT on prime video
Probably old news for most of you, but that show is on prime, all 6 seasons of it...
I used to love this but never saw it on TV past season 2 or 3 when they fly water bombers over the atlantic ocean from Canada to Turkey, crazy people..... Yes, there's some (a lot) of reality TV bull$hit in it, but there's also real flying of WW2 era rotary engine aircraft.... DC3, C46, then later electras, engines blowing up, hairy landings, jug swaps in -40 degrees weather, I've binged it all like crazy and as a result I am now shooting landings in crosswinds with one engine shutdown in a DC3 all over the country on X-plane 11.... Fun stuff... In case some of you did not know ! |
It’s a fun show to watch. Some of the drama gets old but there’s some cool planes, and some guys with huge cojones doing crazy ****.

I met Mikey at Oshkosh this year.... They had flown in for the show in the DC3 they just finished making airworthy again.... Nice guy.

Wow, looks like the weight loss program he did on the last few seasons stopped... He does seem like a nice guy actually... and I'm sure it's scripted for Joe here and there.. I enjoyed bingeing this and my kids now are interested in airplanes and asked me to teach them how to fly on the sim. Win win !

The OP mentioned rotary engines, no e of which ever appear in Ice Pilots ,as they belong to the WW1 and earlier era.
Radials, yes. |

The youtube stuff is a little slow when you catch it all in a row (I guess those were daily releases), like: are you actually fixing that damn plane someday ? - but it's pretty interesting overall. Mostly I like how you get more about people who were somewhat caricatured in Ice Pilots, as hard asses, doofus, moody - and you see them more chilled out in Mikey's videos and they're surprisingly clever, compassionate, really good at explaining technical stuff. Lots of fun viewing for when I'm bored or exercising... Thanks again ! I've got months of contents to catch up on now !
