PITA hose clamps

Had to change a hose from the coolant reservoir to the engine this weekend. The clamps used by Ford are the spring type, that are glued to the hose and released when installed at time of manufacturing.

The new hose doesn’t come with the clamp.

So, it’s easy to get various pliers on it, but you can’t squeeze it enough to get the hose past the raised part of the tube. From the picture, you can see how it’s in the “closed” position.

Maybe there is are special pliers I can get next time to squeeze the clamp to its original locked open position.

Or, it’s just a friggen Ford and use a screw type clamp.

Not just ferd. With the right pliers they work great. :)

There is a tool designed for those that uses a cable. Put the tool on the clamp, squeeze the cable et voila. To install the hose clamp, engage the clip that holds it open, get it in place and release the clip

Hose clamp pliers, you need a pair

I was intrigued... looks so easy with the right tools, just like the title says.

Very cool tool. I’ll remember this in case I lose my mind and work on a liquid-cooled engine in the future.

I saw that tool on Amazon after the job was done. I saw pictures of it with the spring clamp, but not the locking spring clamp. They’re cheap enough to buy and have down the road.

I've always used channel locks. Then I leave those clamps off and put a screw clamp back on.

I really like these spring clamps.

Once you have the tools they're easy to change and if the hose and clamp are in good condition they don't leak.
And the clamp can open and close a little when things get hot or cold.

Spring clamps maintain force on the hose. Screw type lose compression over time. They also are much faster to use than a screw type clamp, which is maybe more important to automobile manufacturers.

This set should solve many clamp hassles...less than $50.

I actually saved that set as a favorite. Probably not the best quality wise, but for a shade tree wrench, it’ll work.

For DIY you really don't need anything more than this!

The cable clamp will do 100% of spring clamps! The slip joint pliers are for final position adjustment once they're back in place.

I bought the cable clamp style pliers years ago. It was the ONLY clamp tool option that would work to allow me to swap out the coolant reservoir on my 997.

Agreed, there are aspects of the spring clamps that I do like. And these days it seems hard to get decent screw clamps from your average parts store. They've gotten thinner and cheaper than they used to be.

Total and utter brutality on a boxster . A real challenge to get all the clamps off ,and back on in their proper position . This is the only tool that will work .

Nickshu 09-26-2019 06:56 AM

I prefer those spring clamps, as said above they are easy w/ the right tools.

They keep constant pressure on the hose across all temperature/expansion ranges, less risk of leakage and breakage compared to worm gear clamps.

RWebb 09-26-2019 11:03 AM

cut or beat them until they come off; replace with spring/screw clamps - spendy, but can be fixed in the middle of a desert w/o special tools
