County and the roads, no rhyme nor reason

Nice freshly paved stretch of asphalt they just did a block from my house, glassy smooth. I know what you are thinking, that sounds just fine.

Thing is, the ONLY nice stretch of street within 5 miles of my house is what they repaved. Every other road has potholes and bad patches, they resurface the pristine stretch

I have see that happen many times over the years - what a waste.

The only thing I can figure (and I’ve heard as much) is that the county/city is trying to quickly spend money in their road maintenance budget (the end of the fiscal year is a few days away) to justify money needed for next year.

They pick a quick and easy stretch of road because they only have a short amount of time before the fiscal year ends on Sept 30.

Because they like you best?

So, my understanding of pavement is that it is cheaper to spend the money keeping good roads good and then just letting bad roads get worse until they finally can redo the whole thing.

Doesn’t explain why they completely redid the best road unless it never got the second layer and they just where finishing it?

South Carolina has finally starting to take proper care of the roads.

The money used to be wasted away putting in patches after every thunderstorm. The same hundreds, week in, week out, over and over.

Now they are finally cutting up the roads and putting down a proper bed.

No need for patches every time it rains or snows.

The rest of my post I'd only write in PARF.

I could see this. We just had a private neighborhood driveway done. It was failing badly under the weight of trash trucks/ etc. One of the neighbors (who worked for the state dept/ of transportation) was telling us the requirements for ripping out/ replacing bad sections of state road. It was an involved effort. In our case (wanting something at least as durable as the county roads around us), it was financially prohibitive to bring the private road up to state standards due to the removal/prep work involved. We ended up patching the holes and overpaving the entire thing. It would never be up to VDOT standards, but it was all we could afford, and even our patchwork/ overpave option wasn't inexpensive.

Not to mention all the shiny new ADA-compliant corners where there aren't any sidewalks...

If they liked me best, I would not have to dodge 3-4 potholes before I get to the first stop sign. These are all Sacramento County roads.

Some of those ADA corners are pretty bizarre. They have eliminated a number of right turn lanes too, that should improve traffic flow.

You will have a nice smooth commute until you get to Winding Way at least.

Is there a bigwig in the county that lives on that nice, new stretch of road?
