Cable guy suggested I get Sling.

Instead of cutting the cord, I was actually calling to 'upgrade' my cable. I want TLC and History for starters. We have the most basic of basic TV and wanted to add those.

The support rep actually suggested I subscribe to Sling instead.

Neither my old Roku or 'Smart' TV's have Sling so I am going to either get an updated Roku, or a Fire stick.

Anyone with experience with both have a preference? I figure they're both about the same...

TIA, for now. :D

roku is much better as it will do Amazon Prime and all the other streaming services as well. The Stick I have is older but it is a kind of a one trick pony unless you want to ummm modify it

I like sling as well

Thanks, I don't want to unlock either and I want the simplest interface for my better half.

Did you remind him how bad sling's commercials are? :D

I have several Roku devices in the house and man cave , a mixture of sticks and tiny table top box . They work equally well . We started streaming Sling and quickly updated to the blue and orange packages .But with both of those packages there was missing programming like CBS as an example .

About a year ago we switched to Hulu Live and are much happier . Not only is it less expensive but the menu of available programming is better for my wife and I. I suggest to anyone thinking about doing streaming to first try out the 30 day free trial that all of the main players provide . You will quickly know what you like or don't like .

There are also free streaming companies out there , I have not personally tried them but there are decent reviews on some . For basic programming that may be an option .

A buddy got Sling recently so he could cut his cable, but still see stuff on Fox. Then Fox ditched sling.

My buddy just found "Locast" which has an AppleTV app if you have an AppleTV.

Free broadcast TV. It's currently only in select major cities

I have the app on my Apple TV, but we watch so little TV, that I've never watched anything on it.

Have no opinion on your question about Sling, but....A LOT of info here:

I use Slingbox..which is somewhat different. (same company..I think)
Very handy when traveling, or when on the outdoor deck for watching any channel.

You might consider Hulu TV. I just did a 1 week trial. My biggest gripe is the channel guide. I'm currently a DTVNow subscriber. FWIW, I have Hulu, Sling, DirecTvNow (At&T TV Now... now) Prime and Netflix on my firestick. No complaints.

Is it just me or is just trying to watch basic t.v. shows without getting sc%ewed over by all the gadgets, contractual complications, and whatnot becoming too complicated these days?

Then the programming, which you've paid for, has turned into 50% obnoxious commercials.
You can't flip channels because it follows.

I quit that entire Soviet Mig-17 round-robin game, back when new 1990's cable channels lied about pay t.v. and commercials.

Kodi and exodus redux addon with a debrid on an appletiv.
Can do kodi on roku, firestick, or computer as well.

Can no longer tolerate commercials. End up falling asleep before show returns from commercial break.

Thanks for the input! I tried Hulu while it was still beta and wasn't impressed. I'm sure it's better now.
I have one option for high speed so that's not great. I was going to drop the TV portion and just keep the internet but my bill would actually go up. Crazy, I know...
