Shipping an Engine Overseas?

One of the people interested in my engine is located overseas. This raises the question -- has anyone here ever shipped a 911 engine overseas? If so, please share what you learned from the experience. Do you have any advice regarding carriers? Customs? Packaging?

Thanks! SmileWavy

Different country. But I sold my spare 915 gearbox, and other parts to Fishcop in Australia. I saw a shipping agent who sends stuff by the container load. I bought a tea chest from them that really had had shipped tea from Celon. I filled the box, he inspected it and sealed it. then when the shipping container was full it got moved to their site in Australia and unpact.

It was cheap because it was part of someone else's container load.

I shipped my 917 case to Germany via Schumacher with zero issues. Buyer paid the shipping cost so not sure what $$ was.

Wife bought it for me from the Vasek Polak warehouse sell-off for Valentines Day!

We were told that it ran in the L&M car driven by George Follmer.

I sent a complete Super 90 to France. I acquired a crate from a local carrier, with tip indicators, inside and out. Inside is key for Insurance.

I would never ship anything the way that 917 went. Full crate!!!

You will have customs paperwork, and federal paperwork.

It's fairly simple.

Thanks for your opinion!

It was shipped exactly the way the buyer, Freizinger Porsche Racing in Germany specified.

+1

full crate. nothing stopping anything from falling on it, and destroying it.

Thanks for the responses (and the picture of the 917 case!). If I went the path of a crate, any idea where to get them, or did you build one around the part you were shipping? Disclaimer -- I didn't do that well in 7th grade wood shop.

I ALWAYS let the buyer make arrangements and get their own shipping quotes. I'll put it on a pallet or build a crate if the buyer pays for one. Then I'll forklift into the truck, take a picture and send it to the buyer. If you don't let the buyer handle shipping, you are taking responsibility all the way to the buyer's location. If anything goes wrong, it's on you, even though there's nothing you can do or controle.

I wasn't trying to start a war. I would rather a buyer gets exactly what they bought. Not countless hours dealing with Insurance to be made whole.

My buyer said, "strap it to a pallet". He paid me well. I went the extra mile. That's the way I do business.

I purchased the crate from a local International Logistics company. I called a few and described what was being shipped. IIRC, I paid $150. for the crate, and it was very sturdy, and well built. I met with him on a Thursday, and paid for it in full. I picked it up the next day. The guy I met with, used the money to buy all the employees pizza.

Everyone was happy, including the buyer.

I also let the buyer get the quote and handle payment. I will drop it off at the location they choose.

No war!

My buyer told me how he wanted it shipped and that's what I did. No more and no less.
He probably would not have been happy if I had "gone an extra mile" and not followed his instructions.

Tobra 10-02-2019 05:26 AM

German guy, right. Specific instructions too, secure using this sort of rope, tied to these spots, yada yada.
