U Haul says people are leaving California

https://myuhaulstory.com/2021/01/04/uhaul-names-top-50-growth-states-2020/

I’ve been hearing a lot about this but wondered if true. California is beautiful and jobs plentiful, pre-Covid. So why leave? Let’s try not to PARF this, if possible.

Who uses Uhaul to move?

That's just a subset of the population. Not to sound arrogant, but I have never used Uhaul to move. Always had corporate moving packages.

It is concerning though, if middle class and lower are fleeing the state, who will hold those jobs in the long run?

The cost of living. The lower middle class in Cali is a upper middle class elsewhere.

Here in Half Moon Bay, just over the hill from Silicon Valley, real estate is booming. Prices are ridiculous, but houses sell with multiple offers in days. That wouldn't be happening if the population were going down. But Silicon Valley is unique.

I started a similar thread on this not long ago (not in PARF). Lots of people use U Haul (I have a couple of times).

Surprised (or maybe not so surprised) to see Oregon and Washington well down on the list also.

Interesting, never tried long distance. The story is that lower income people are leaving CA and moving to FL, TX, TN etc. It makes sense.

Yeah...that 19.95 per day van? Only for "in town" use...realistically comes to more like 150.00 per day.

Kinda like car rentals these days. 39.95 per day for a subcompact...my @ss! More like...quadruple that for starters! Truly burns me!

Cost of living, overpopulation, traffic, God awful heat, taxes, too much of a nanny state.

We moved this year and used PODS with paid loaders. Also used a small Uhaul for the excess. Very convenient.

But for 22 years the Gov moved me and I swear it is a huge PITA. Usually dudes that you don't want coming in your house and they are there for days on the front end. On the destination side, I would try to get the stuff in the house and unpack at my own pace. Wanted them gone most riki tik.

After my neighbor's husband died of cancer 15 years ago, she took her two daughters and moved back home to California to be close to her folks and brothers. I ran into her yesterday as she just moved back to Texas. She said California is no longer the way it was when she grew up there. She did OK though, made enough on selling her house there to pay off the mortgage and pay cash for a bigger house here.

Why is Washington surprising? In reality its very near the top of that list. Corporate relocations in the thousands, likely tens of thousands if you combine Amazon and Microsoft. Despite the pandemic they are still relocating people the area. As are Google and Facebook.

The last house to sell on my street in early December had a line down driveway and up the sidewalk when they had open houses. Went for 200k+ over asking.

I would not rely on U-Haul for accurate stats on people moving to more expensive areas.

Then there are still the large amount of people coming into our state. I know some of our brain trust are moving out as well as big business. I hate to see this but it isn't a fair trade. None of my neighbors on my street but two old timers are from LA or CA. They are all from elsewhere in the country. A couple of them are from the UK and most are in the fooking movie or entertainment industry even the lawyers work for the same industry. Yep, ultra left lib-tards. You know the type who complain about having rats in the house but don't want to kill it type Defune the police, but someone is in our yard, why aren't cops doing anything about it?

I talk with a bunch of sane people and they all want to leave due to politics, unreal tax hikes and fees but all say, where the hell am I going? I am in the same boat, where? No shorts year round, snow tires, no Porsche meet monthly or car show weekly? For the most part, if you don't get involve with the stupid stuff, people pretty much leave you alone and enjoy the sunny socal weather and life style.

Only if half the illegals, and 20% of the low life would just get the hell home, this would be a much better place.

Funny how the news or U tube blow thing out of proportion. A small % leaves, and its mass exodus. Like out weather report, storm watch. 1/4" rain and show rain water running down filling the gutter on the street.

Why Can't drive? You planning to leave? Where? I do know a few of my personal friends left due to gun laws. I don't shoot. Only thing I shoot is the breeze so there's that.

One more thing, with the mass amount of people in our state or cities, they drove the hosing up through the roof. Without them, there wouldn't be so much equity for you and I. Like every large cities around the free world, including China(not a free world), density drives property value through the roof. I was watching this thing on Hong Kong, London and NYC on how people property owners made huge amounts of money just sitting on old properties purchased long ago.

A lot of people in my neighborhood moved after the second shut down. One of my neighbors speculates it's too expensive to live here if your only income is a govt stimulus check, which makes sense.

We don't need to talk about this, all is swell in CA...Only misfit whiners of a deplorable political persuasion say anything negative about CA's enlightened Progressive political policies.

It'd be great if it didn't become another CA bashing thread by people that haven't even been to the state in 20 years.

So, where are the Uhaul people moving and why? And is that meaningful data, compared to who is coming?

I did read that the state population growth has been the lowest since 1900 in the covid year of 2020. I bet it stifled immigration both legal and illegal.

Read the article...you obviously didn't. Oregon listed as #45...so Tabby's comment applies here as well.

No Hawaii on the list! But 50 states are listed. Then I realized they list washington DC as a State and omitted Hawaii. Kinda hard to drive a Uhaul to Hawaii i guess but if you're going to be accurate.... just sayin
