Funny, isn't there another thread about kids not being interested in cars?
I haven't yet read the article, but I agree that there are kids driving cars that are far too powerful and fast for kids with so little experience. Fortunately, the modern cars have much, much better safety than the old cars (even the giant cars of the 60s and 70s with large beams and lots of sheet metal).

To some extent, I would agree. I personally know of 3 or more younger guys building crazy fast hill climb cars . 6-800 hp twin turbo LS motors in BMW's, . One guy is on chassis #3.
It is fairly easy for a crafty guy with some money to make big power .

For me, I didn't grow up in a "car family".
We had one vehicle. It wasn't a sports car. For me, my interest in cars waxed strong from getting to play with them via computers. NFS PU, I had a microsoft sidewinder force feedback racing wheel, fell in love with the Porsche 944. Realized I could save my money and buy one IRL in the coming years when I could get my drivers licence. Check out this video, 4.5Million views, it is just a computer game overlay over real cars. Would not surprise me if some of the owners of those cars perhaps were attracted to what they bought via gaming in the early 2000's. There can be a lag from when you are into a car, and when you can afford to buy that car. |

Yep...too much speed combined with lack of talent usually means youth..

It's gone even more crazy in the last 10 years.
I know kids fresh out of college who own BMW M cars and late model Jeeps. No clue how they are driving $40k cars. I never spent that kind of money on cars at any age. Tuner car shows are massive events

Be glad you weren't the pickup driver.

Good old credit. Unfortunately a lot of these kids will end up injure (or worse) or broke.

'Sideshows' are popular out here now...lots of noise and stupid antics are the big draw. Oakland CA seems to be the epicenter of this lunacy, but lately I've been noticing 'donut' circles showing up in more & more local intersections too.

A girl tenant of mine who grew up in Singapore and only dates Asian guys told me this.
Young Asian guys come to Uni in New Zealand then phone their dads and say that public transport is almost non existent in NZ and can I have some money for a car - please send $100,000.00 So they buy a brand new Honda (about $30,000.00) then take it to a tuner so it blows flames out the back (cam overlap etc), lowered, big wheels. Then the big joke is about ten of them share one drivers license. Most of them have never driven a car before let alone a fire breathing dragon. Very dangerous for the rest of us. |

At one of my local tracks this saying is posted in the paddock:
“You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.”

It may be dumb, but so was all car culture over all generations. And there is a massive crowd. No crowds like that when you were driving your Chevelle as a teen.
