iRacing a Miata at Lime Rock

Just started iRacing. Thought I’d go simple with a spec Miata at my home track: Lime Rock Park.

After so many real laps in a 911SC the track is pretty realistic even if it is the old layout.

Why don’t Miatas oversteer under lift throttle? Damn 50-50 balance.

Finding out my 911 way of scrubbing speed and rotating the car by lift-throttle and hanging the tail out is completely useless in a Miata. May have to upgrade for the GT3, I need a more comfortable 38/62 balance. 😁

Been a few years but a Miata at lime rock was my absolute favorite thing to do on iRacing. Great track not too hard to memorize. That last turn onto the front straight was a little tense and the right onto the uphill bit was also a great place to screw up.

also while I never did actual track time I did autocross my 70 911 and a 90 Miata for a period of time. Hated that you couldn’t lift to rotate the Miata as well as the 911. Lost interest in auto x the Miata and got priced out of air cooled 911s.

That's a problem with the game physics or the setup of the car, because after having 2 miatas (3 really, '97 with stiffer suspension and 15x7, 2004 turbo with 15x8, and the missus had a '99 with 15x7.5) I can tell you that you absolutely can get throttle lift oversteer in a miata. A miata is more likely to catch itself once it's scrubbed some speed than a 911 which will end up going backwards, but it's still going to tighten or even slide. The first time I tried taking a corner extra hot and using the throttle to tighten the line, it got far more sideways than I expected until it scrubbed enough speed and then it jerked back in line so hard that I hit my head on the top at the top of the driver's side window. That was an educational experience.

Miatas don't rotate, they scrub. It isn't bad, it is just different.

That is what I noticed. Makes the downhill really fast.

Braking just seems numb and without feedback. I am constantly overcooking Big Bend looking for trailing throttle steering that isn’t there.

Time to play with the FOV and steering sensitivity.
