IMSA president Scott Atherton retiring
While at Petit LeMans yesterday it was announced that IMSA president Scott Atherton was going to retire . He was a huge factor in the ALMS and Grand Am merger . I wasn't happy about the merger but now that it is coming up on 8 years of being a done deal I can honestly say I enjoy the racing . I hope he and his wife have a long and happy life as a retired couple . I don't think it will be too long before his replacement is announced .

He was there from ALMS onwards, (and I think we should include thanking Don Panoz in there) - they brought really cool Euro style GT to america, with developments like the Panoz front engine batmobile (absolutely amazing car even if they never really dominated). I probably (cheerfully) lost 25% of my hearing because of that car ! Also, because american manufacturers joined in the game and did very well, my respect for the likes of Corvette and Ford increased immensely. I've really enjoyed ALMS/IMSA for the past 20 something years, attended whenever it was <3hrs from me (sears, laguna, Sebring, daytona) so I've got nothing but good thoughts for Mr Atherton and the philosophy of ALMS since the beginning ("for the fans" full access) - I got to shake hands (before selfies were a thing) with legends walking the paddock, like McNish, Auberlen, Wollek, etc !
When my European friends see my pictures taken at IMSA events they always comment on how lucky we are to get so close to the cars we can touch them... IMSA rules at the moment... Last edited by Deschodt; 10-14-2019 at 10:07 AM.. |

Looks like John Doonan formerly Mazda race director will replace Atherton . John is passionate about sports car racing so he " should " be a good fit .

G'day!
|
He lives about 4 houses down from me. See him and his wife walking their dogs when they're in town. One day I will introduce myself..."Hi I'm Bazza. You know...."the" Bazza from PPOT? You can just call me Baz, though."
