moving a metal car port

So my next project is to move a metal car port from location A to location B on our property . The car port will be the new home for my truck camper to park under . So yesterday I started clearing the area where the new install will take place . I am recessing it into the woods on our property so it will blend in a little . When everything is cleared and leveled I'm going to get a guy to come in and drill me 8 fence post holes 4 on each side . There will be 6x6 posts sticking up above grade by 36 " . The posts will be tied together by 2x's and 6x6's on top of the posts . The metal base of the car port will be assembled on top of the structure , giving me plenty of height to get the camper under there when it's on the truck . Here is the mess I started yesterday , I do love the scream of a chainsaw 2 cycle

Worked about 6 hours today and Sue ( wife ) was a real trooper . She manned the clippers while I did the bigger stuff . Everything I cut down yesterday has been cut up and moved out of the way . Time now to get someone in here to grind the 13 stumps and level the dirt . If the same guy could do the post holes even better . Enjoying some adult cocktails at the moment and watching NHL game .......... life is good !

Yeah this retirement gig is killing me ! Moving this carport and building a two car garage at the end of the house are the last two major construction projects I have left . After that rebuild the back deck ( not too bad ) and finish the restoration of the truck camper .

Correction on the retirement it is 1000 % worth it ........... its just that now I have the time to do the projects . Unless I am physically unable I will always be doing something .

Hey guys another update So on Tuesday " the guy " I hired to do the site excavation showed up . A few hours later all stumps are gone and the site is within 1/8 " of level side to side and front to back per the transit . As it turns out he can drill the post holes also so waiting for him to return to do that . I am expecting to have 9 posts 6x6x8 ' in the ground in the next week or so, sunk down about 54 " . There will be 4 on each side spaced just under 5 ' apart . There will be 1 post in the back placed in the middle . The foot print of the car port is 18 ' 2 " wide x 19 ' deep .

I will take 10 ' long 2x's and screw them to the outside of the posts forming a mini wall of sorts . The posts will be aprox. 42 " above the surface . I will then screw a 6 x 6 on top of the posts that will be the final surface for the metal car port base metal to bolt to . I will then put down some house wrap as a weed block and a little bit of a vapor barrier then fill in 4 " - 5 " of # 57 gravel as my " finished " floor . The car port currently only has a roof but I have roofing/wall metal left over from my man cave build . So once I have the car port in place I will enclose the sides and back . It is now in the mid to high 90's here so I'm sweating like a pig But it's slowly coming along , here is a pic of the excavated site .

On Friday I went to a local pressure treated wood factory and picked up the 6x6's that will make up the framework for the carport to be elevated onto . The lumber yard loaded them for me and when I got home my John Deere 332 diesel garden tractor with a mini front end loader easily removed them from my truck . So minimal grunt work and " the boys " are still resting comfortably in the sack

I did that once in Floyd County (Rome, GA) and it took me 4 days to dig the 9 holes with a post hole digger! I don't blame you for waiting for "the guy"!

Not only is this clay a beotch to dig into I am sure some tree roots will be in the way . A tractor mounted 9 " auger will be a hot knife through butter . Well worth the money to hire the guy .

Smart move! I was wondering how you were going to do this.

This morning I got a call from " the guy " and he will be at the house on Wednesday . We are trying to beat potentially rainy Thursday - Sunday . If nothing else I can place the 6x6's in the holes and get them plumb . Maybe drop two bags of concrete mix into the holes and let mother nature do the mix .

This morning " the guy " shows up early with a sweet skid steer with a hydraulic powered post hole auger , this thing went through clay/roots/rocks like a hot knife through butter So I now have 9 posts 6 x 6 x 8' long aprox. 52 " in the ground . Everything nice and plumb/square . After the guys left I then poured a minimum of 160 lbs. of concrete in each hole , these are NOT going anywhere in my lifetime !

Just as I was pouring the last bags of concrete around the posts it started to rain , we haven't had rain in a while and the ground is dry . It was a nice steady rain for about 2 hours or so . Supposed to rain off and on through Sunday so the timing is perfect . So I'm going to leave the posts alone through the weekend . The next task is to run a level line from the post sticking up out of the ground the least , I will mark then trim the remaining 8 posts . After that 10 ' long 6x6 posts will be placed on top of the posts and screwed in with 10 " long specialty screws .

Then on the exterior of the posts from the ground level to the top will be 2x12's screwed onto the posts , basically making 4 ' tall walls . Between the posts on top and the perimeter 2x's it will be one strong foundation . When the carport is installed onto this base structure I will have 11 ' at the eaves and 14 ' to the peak , more than enough to get my truck camper in and out of . Here are two pics of todays progress .

More progress today , first task was to trim all posts to the same height . Wasn't too bad and all is level . Next was hoisting the 6x6x10' posts onto the trimmed posts , my John Deere diesel garden tractor with a front end loader sure saved my back All the top horizontal posts are now in place , screwed down and trimmed to length . Next I installed the 2x12x10's to tie in the horizontal posts to the vertical posts . I used 6 " long Timberlok screws to screw the 2x's to the posts . I used 10 " long Timberloks through the top posts into the vertical posts . This beotch is solid as a rock ! The concrete has setup nicely I am very happy with the results .

I think for an extra measure of stability I am going to screw 2x's to the inside to tie in the vertical posts with the horizontal posts . That way the horizontal posts are tied in on both sides which will eliminate any potential sag in between the vertical posts . I still have two 2x12's to screw onto the back but I ran out of steam , it is VERY humid at the moment and it saps your strength . I was out there for 8 hours not bad for 61 years old Anyway here are two pics of today's progress , very soon I will start the disassembly of the carport and do the move .
