Anyone try Antigravity Battery new Li-on battery?
 

Saw it in October Excellence mag (yeah,, I'm behind in my reading).

They claim the Li-on battery is a lead-acid/AGM replacement that can provide power if your battery is dead. Anyone have one or read up on it? Do you thing it is doable for an air-cooled 911? I've got an OLD Optima red top on a trickle charger. They say the new ones aren't as good as the old ones were so I'm thinking ahead if and when it finally gives up.

We have used a couple of the smaller Powersports ones in Boxster race cars. Good battery, plenty of cranking amps and it does have reserve start feature you can activate by pressing a button on the top of the battery. Dont' know how good the capacity would be on a street car, but they do make bigger ones.

Talked with the guys a ttheir booth. They claims the battery is smart and will not complete discharge itself. it will cut out and reserve about three crankings for you to get the car started. Shey sure are light

Putting aside a complex setup ("What could possibly go wrong with programing?"-Bill Gates), what about an Li-on battery in a 30+ year old air cooled 911?
(the alternator has been replaced, all connections are clean, and it works perfectly)

A friend has it in all of his on road race cars. He ran Baja with one of their battery last year and held up fine.

I was under the impression that Li-on required different charging. Maybe I had some bad info.

they can take a 5/10% charge to about 95%
the last 5% has to taper or the battery gets hot and can catch fire
the better battery's should have on board controllers to do the taper end charge
they also need to balance the cells charge and keep them balanced or fire :rolleyes:

A small LiFePo4 battery could easily do this with some diodes and a bypass switch.

I weighed one at Laguna seca recently, it's *shockingly* light, especially if you just replaced a modern 911 battery and bulged a disc doing it ;-) I know they're not cheap but what's the rule ? how many lbs = 1 hp again ? People probably spend more for lower gains in performance. I liked it, I will buy one next time mine dies.

I like that
a) they have a shutdown/reserve feature you can use w. a remote to start a "dead" battery
b) it is supposed to last 2x possible 3x longer than a regular lead acid or AGM. So the increased cost over time is not as shocking as one may think !
c) it's a F%$Kton of weight up high in the car that gets taken out.
