Quantum Computing
It may be impossible but I wonder if a brainium here can explain to me in normal Engrish what quantum computing is.
The monster of AI coupled with quantum computing (whatever that is) seems to me to have the potential of really screwing humanity up way worser than it already is and sooner rather than later. |
AI+Quantum computing = Terminator.

In todays memory and CPU's,,, a digital Bit can only be a 1 or a 0. it's on,,, or off.
In Googles new Quantum CPU, that 1 or 0 bit can be both at the same time. wild !!! https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/23/tech/google-quantum-supremacy-scn/index.html |
I do know that quantum computing has been a dream for many years. Kinda like nuclear fusion or real intelligent computing. "Very soon" it just needs more research.
Someday, it likely will happen. It is far more likely than cold fusion. |
It is to Bits what Schrödinger is to cats

Currrent chips bits are yes or no.
quantum puter bits can say yes, no, maybe ;) |

I wrote one "program" in machine language (1s and 0s) while getting my computer science degree 4 decades ago....up hill, both ways in the snow and a hunert degrees.
Now I just hafta do this....I reckon. 000000000000000000000000000... Kidz got it so eazy theze daze ;) |

Maybe an example of what it can do will help. If you try to solve a puzzle maze, you sort of follow one path at a time until you find a way out.
The quantum computer will try every possibility instantaneously and provide an answer (well, a probability for the most likely answer)..... instantly. Will also render all current computer password algorithms useless since it can test every possibility at one time- except for quantum encryption - For more info look for "BB84"). Truly amazing stuff. Let’s see how quick it can cure cancer, then I’ll be impressed

When do we get the hot looking green aliens? |
The only thing more fascinating and mysterious than quantum computers are biological ones. And they’ve been around a long time.

you didn't add the extra bit for the check sum validation . :D |
So, like, instead of like filling up a barrel by throwing in one BB at a time, QC is, like, throwing all of 'em in at once?

OH I see... |

Isn't that what powers the improbability drive?

Computing is a whole nuther thing. We have one at work and it seems like they're still working on what to do with it. Like they have to invent completely new mathematics and programming concepts. It _sounds_ cool though with all of the clacking and pumping of the massive kit of cryo gear that keeps it alive. |
BB84 is like the first flight at kittyhawk. QM has been around (theoretically) since the big E - 1930's; BB84 was the first use of QM for a practical application. That was in 1984 (it is not cheap or easy, but if you don't think it is being used today by those that really need and can afford to do it- ie. Uncle S, think again)
Advances in QM are not coming quickly, but it will be worth the wait. If you want a steady job in the future, start studying QM. It isn't that difficult, it is just extremely "unfamiliar." The math of E's theory of relativity (differential geometry) is much more difficult than the math of QM. Shut up and calculate! Charles |

With QM, I am assuming bitcoins will be worthless since computers will have the power to mine them instantly...but ssh, BTC is going up right now.

I've been out of the game for a while, but many times things like QC are "theoretical".... they don't apply to the "real world" of computers imo. For three decades I had almost total access to the fastest processors and 'plexes commercially available..."the keys to the kingdom" so to speak. MIPS (Millions Instructions Per Second) can be deceiving to many that don't understand. Sometimes faster is slower when it comes to applying the latest and greatest....it just depends :). But I never worked with Crays either....so who knows...dyadic, quadratic, quantumatic :) I wuz a geek... T-Rex... |
