What to do with all of my old Porsche books and manuals

Over the years I collected a number of 911 books and shop manuals. Nothing overly valuable. As I check on Ebay, the total value is probably around $200. It's a pain in the ass to ship these books piecemeal. I'm tempted to toss them all in the trash just to make room on the bookshelves. I suppose I could take them to the Salvation Army.

Any other suggestions?

I'm sure someone here would be happy to pay for shipping and your time for the bulk or many of them. I'd say "post some pics" but then you'd probably have everyone on the board wanting a different book and you'd be back at shipping them all piecemeal.

Here in Houston, I'd say "take them to 'Half-Priced Books'," but seems pretty likely that you don't have one in Lincoln.

If you don't want to go that route, then maybe drop some of them off at your favorite mechanic's shop for their waiting room or Salvation Army or Good Will or stick them in your paper recycling.

Good to see ya posting stranger! I have shop manuals, other books, and some mags that pertain to my '88. I'll let them go with my 911 when the time comes.

I haven't been to the tech forum in a long time, but surely someone "wants" them?

Mebbe post there....

Or just send 'em to Baz

Good luck!

I've sold a bunch here, to people that were happy to get them as they are embarking on their Porsche journeys. For ever new old 911 owner selling off his cars, there are new 911 owners buying them.

I'm a little anal about shipping my books but you can just throw them in a padded envelope and mail them USPS media mail for 2 or 3 bucks. Not that difficult.

That’s a great idea! I tried posting Porsche books in the “literature for sale” forum, but nobody ever goes there!

If you are just going to throw them in the bin, I'd love to have them

They are yours. I live in the near south neighborhood. Not quite 2 miles from UNL campus.

If the deal with t-tom doesn't work out, I'd love to take them off your hands too. I'm just north in the big-O but go to Lincoln quite often.

A like-new 1956 shop manual came with my 1956 coupe when I bought it in 1973, and a friend gave me a 356 Erzatzteil Katalog that he bought when he bought his car back in the 1950s. I also have a fairy ratty 1953 Porsche shop manual somewhere. I have no idea what they are worth, but I've been taking care of them. I have them in sealed bags and haven't needed to open them in years - although I should look for that extensive chapter on corner balancing that Afterburnerboy swears is in the shop manual .
Here are pictures. I'm not taking them out of the bags for pictures because it's a pain to re-seal them.

Everything written on paper, unless it is unique, 1st Edition, etc., is depressed in value.

We have purged 95% of our books. We called the local used book seller and gave him the first pass. The rest went to the local library, over 50 boxes of the liquor store variety boxes filled to the brim.

Our houses foundation is returning to plumb.

If I had a house with space, I'd be sucking up that sort of thing. The old stuff is so cool, but i don''t have room in the apt and don't need more for storage.

The world is saturated.
Or the right people are not being reached..at the right time..and the right price.
Even free to a good home is better.
I don't understand the resale market but don't toss something that is good.

We need more better distribution venue systems...other than a few major outlets.

Remember when surplus B-17s were selling for eleven grand, but nobody bought them?
They got turned into lawn chairs in Burkina Faso or fascia panels for another China high rise destined to last 20 years.

Those who clean house want to get rid of their stuff immediately.
Those who really want that stuff, want it now, and possibly at any price.
It either becomes garbage or unobtainable mint.

After the passing of my Dad, I wound up with more than 100 of his Civil Engineering text books that he had when he graduated with a Civil Engineering degree in 1943, books he obtained through his mentors and books he purchased while practicing. Probably spanned 1900-1975. I had already delivered and donated 4 flat files of 5 drawers each of his and his mentors bridge plans to the State Archives and History, after reaching out to specific clients, mainly the railroads, and given them the option of picking them up before they went to Archives and History. Some showed up, others didn't. It was what my Dad asked me to do.

As for the books, they were "dumped" on my front porch by my brother the Executor of my Dads estate after they didn't sell in the estate sale.

I called the library at the University he graduated from in 1943 and asked them if they would like the books. They told me to bring them on and I made the 250 mile round trip to deliver the books. They were thrilled to have them. Dad would be happy that his old books "went home" to where he got his start.

We got rid of virtually all of our books the last move. Filled 25 boxes. Donated all of them.
One of the classes I'll teach next year has no textbook.
I brought a stack of printed syllabi to the first classes last quarter. Nobody took one.
Hard copies of the magazines I subscribe to tend to pile up, and I let them lapse.

Things you can touch and hold onto are becoming obsolete. Much of that is good, but much too is lost.
