YP - I enjoy your photos of ships in port......What is your job? Longshoreman?

If you enjoy your job, I don't see any reason to stop unless you become physically unable or another more important task/items comes up that requires you to quit (or they tell you to go home).

Used to run this company, years ago, then one of my best friends bought out the owners and I stayed on to help him, these past 15 yrs, I now mostly work for him, whatever he requires me to do I can do it. Gofer would be a good description. I enjoy it. We mostly off load cargo (more comes in then goes out) but it was the opposite 25 yrs ago.

BTW we're called stevedores here, a british term I think. I always said stevedores go aboard the ship to work and longshoremen are ashore workers. We do both.

I have an office, second floor looking over the ships, thats where I hang out. It's a good way to spend the day, for an old guy like me. Over the past 48 yrs I've met some real characters, both local guys, (our workers) and ships crew and I think about that alot. Sometimes things could get pretty rough.

The scary trick or treater must have been a stow away! Good job nabbing that one without getting hurt. She looks dangerous!

The second picture is interesting. I guess what we're seeing standing up above the deck of the boat are hatch covers that are hinged in the middle? Kind of like the shutters in this photo, but maybe a little bit bigger and a tiny bit heavier?

Can you tell us whatever happened to the door that got dropped into the hold of a ship that you posted a couple of photos and a little info about a couple of years ago?

And while you're at it, you could throw in a couple of interesting stories. Surely, you've got a slew of whacky stories whether related to characters, cargo, incidents or weather or some combination of the above.

Yeah those are the hatches and they roll back in place electrically, and about the dropped hatch cover, we put it back in the hold at the bottom and they left port can't recall what took place.

Over the years, lots of fights and threats but I managed it all without too much damage.

A couple of stories stand out in the 80's and 90's while I was working for the ships owners as a ships agent. I'd be one of the first guys aboard right after the customs officers and I would deal directly with the Captain (paperwork etc). On one occasion with an Asian crew one of the officers sitting with the Capt kept motioning to me with both hands on his head and wiggling his fingers in the air. He kept doing this and it was a bit odd to me. Finally I asked the Capt "what is this guy doing?" The Capt replied " he wants me to ask you if the crew can get some moose antlers, they're an aphrodisiac and he seems to think the crew needs that" (Just what they need at sea) I thought!! Sorry Capt no moose here. Capt asked then "What about bear paws?" Nope sorry.

One other story. Another ship, Philippine Capt and crew, and I was visiting the Capt on the second or third day. When I got aboard the mate said "OH hello agent the
Captain is at the stern pissing, come with me" "No no no I'll wait here for him" No no come with me" So at the stern, there's the Capt fishing, to my relief, not pissing.

I remember that one year you were driving the hot rod right up to New Years. Is the weather nice now ?

So far so good, but could get our first snow today. But..I'll be out touring ASAP/ALAP
