What sci-fi book series is this?

The missus read a sci-fi book (she thinks it was a series of books) and she can't remember the name.

When people are born, they are tested, and some are able to "jump" or transfer into other bodies in other places in the universe. They are valuable and used for political reasons, assasinations, etc... They can only transfer a fixed number of times and when they do their last transfer, they lose their memories of who they were and become who they transferred into. Many planets have bodies just for them to transfer into or they can transfer into someone that just died.

In this series, there's a guy that's especially powerful (has the potential for many transfers) that comes from a more primitive planet. And then there's another faction that has their own powerful woman who they try to get to thwart this other guy. At some point they end up on a water planet where they've transferred into the bodies of sentient fish-creatures, and at another point they transfer into boxy creatures. I guess a lot of the story is about the 2 folks, and apparently, at the end, they end up having sex hoping to create a powerful offspring. Apparently, they have a grand daughter named Melody that is powerful and there may be another book series about her.

Any thoughts?

Careful, any mention of The Don and the mods will move this to PARF. ;)

When I was young, I read the entire Xanth series from Piers Anthony. I tried picking one up and reading it recently. It did not stand the test of time.

I should checkout the Incarnations of Immortality series again. On a Pale Horse was good.

Piers Anthony wrote some good stuff, but also some of the stuff that I've read has made me wonder. Both in the back of some of the Xanth novels about readers that he had pen-pal relationships with and then Firefly
