Returning my BBQ to Costco

Somehow I feel guilty.

Reading how many people take advantage of Costco Return Policy.

BUT, it IS covered under warranty.

I BBQ 2-3 times a week...........year 'round. Gets heavy use.

Some of you have gained weight due to me.......Hi Jeff

It's 2 years old. Paid $800-1000 for it.

Has a mix of parts with 1, 3, and 10 year warranties

now after 2 years of constant love.....The stainless burners only half light, IR side burner same, no igniters........just standard tired BBQ stuff.

It's got 6 main stainless burners @ $30 each $180
The Side IR sear station burner is $80
Side IR cast iron grate $40.

plus shipping.

That's $300 for 3 parts alone, I could list more.

Googling, seems like people DO take BBQ's back, and get full money back. The receive about 1 a month, so rare.

Why do I feel guilty for taking mine back? would you feel weird rolling a 5 foot long BBQ into Costco? Maybe I cook steaks on it that morning just to make them drool....

Here's a list of some wild returns, that were accepted.

RH - Don't feel guilty at all. You paid top dollar and should expect more. I rarely return items, but had a small fridge in my cabin with a bad compressor after 2 years.......Costco took it back no problem.......

Ayles 11-11-2019 09:28 AM

I worked at Costco in college. Return it. What you describe is not abusing their policy.

I did certainly see some abuses in my time... like people returning trampolines at the end of summer.

craigster59 11-11-2019 10:00 AM

I have the Weber 3 burner Genesis w/ sear station from Costco. Is it a similar grill?

MBAtarga 11-11-2019 10:22 AM

At least it's not a dead and brown Christmas tree from last year!

Rick Lee 11-11-2019 10:25 AM

Costco's tire dept. accused me of lying when I tried to get them to honor their road hazard warranty on a tire we got there. I knew it was gonna be a fight because our membership had since lapsed and we had gone to Sam's. But we did buy those tires from Costco while Costco members. They ended up honoring it, but it was a real headache and it took a lot of self-control for me not to go to mgt. to complain about that guy implying I was lying to get some money out of them.

Battery quit on my wife's Sienna within two years. Took it back to Costco and see about getting another with the prorated discount. Guy behind the counter said, we just give you a new one. I thought about it for a second and before I had a chance to jump for joy, he said, "don't feel bad, we do this all the time. Some people bring back completely dead batteries after 4 year, we give them a new one". Crazy return policy. I hate that place due to the mass amount of people but my wife's there once every two weeks mid morning with no one around.

I go on Saturdays to the one in Santa Clarita. Opens at 9:30 but they usually let you in around 9:10-15, I'm out of there by 9:30-45.

My battery from Supercheap Auto here in NZ quit less than 12 months into it's three year warranty. I took it back to Supercheap and the girl said she would have to discuss with the battery companies sales rep'. I said what's your name and started filling in a small claims court document I had brought with me LOL She was so angry I thought she was going to punch me and a whole lot of other customers started laughing at her and taunting her. Pretty funny. I got my battery and a round of applause from the other customers.

look 171 11-11-2019 01:27 PM

Taunting her, and you didn't stop the mean people:rolleyes:? What a bad boy you are? :DDid you read the Fried chicken thread. That could have gone down really bad but you would sue the company for millions and maybe you will own the battery company when the dust settles. Maybe only in this country? :)

Bill Douglas 11-11-2019 01:44 PM

I certainly wouldn't have done it after having read the Fried Chicken Thread. Oh no. Especially if I knew I wold be slam dunked on the concrete outside

rfuerst911sc 11-11-2019 02:32 PM

Rusty Heap I would load the grill into your vehicle and head over there . Go inside and ask for a manager . Walk him/her out to your vehicle and explain the situation . Not sure what the warranty states do you get replacement parts for free ? A refund ? A new grill ? They offer a warranty for a reason , don't feel bad about using it . Good luck

Or an 80" tv, 4 folding tables and 24 folding chairs a week after Super Bowl.

RWebb 11-11-2019 02:54 PM

ask for the new parts, or for a pro rata refund on another one (2 yrs use)

be grateful when they give you a new one

Superman 11-11-2019 03:29 PM

Costco normally sells decent quality stuff. You should expect more from them than this. Even Costco will say that. Return it.

Costco checkout lines move remarkably fast.

Jeff Higgins 11-11-2019 03:34 PM

They don't do this out of the kindness of their hearts. It's built into their business model. Everything we buy there helps pay for it. Don't you dare feel bad, not for one New York minute. Or steak... burp... And, yes folks, young David can grille. His is a very dangerous deck to find one's self upon... burp...

HardDrive 11-11-2019 03:42 PM

I don't object to you exercising your rights as a consumer. If you want to return it, you should.

But the reason you feel guilt is because you know that the its going to straight in the garbage, when it could be repaired. If it were me, I would repair, but to each their own.

You are correct, if a seller got too many returns they are out.

In Canada, Optima battery past the return threshold and they are no longer a supplier.

Interesting. I like it. Very much a consumer feedback based quality control model.

There you go. Our “everything is disposable” society rubs me the wrong way. I’m a son of a Depression family. We were never allowed to throw anything away. I feel guilty when I throw something fixable out.

My mother, as I've mentioned before, grew up in pre-WWII Germany. Our Depression was largess compared to what the German people suffered. I well remember her washing out the sandwich bags she used to pack our school lunches. Saving every bit of tinfoil. Going back to the grocery store with the same grocery bags she had been using for months, long before it was fashionable. She really was something else. My dad was not far behind, having grown up in just post-Depression Kansas, in a farmhouse with 12 siblings, on a dirt floor. I understand the sentiment, and try to live it every day myself. I take great pride in keeping stuff going that others would toss.

That said, most of the stuff I "keep going" I inherited from my dad. It was made to be treated that way. It was expected that everything was repairable, several times. Times have changed. Most of today's consumer goods are simply not repairable, and were never meant to be. They have made it very difficult, if not impossible, for us "fixers" to keep it going.

I've had many items that were my dad's finally give up, after many rebuilds. Mostly things like power tools and the like. Finally no parts available, like when I've turned the commutator down far enough to finally need a replacement - situations like that. So I have to buy a whole new drill motor, or skill saw, or whatever. The new replacements have never held up, not like my dad's, and no parts are available. I hate it...

Rusty Heap 11-11-2019 06:12 PM

maybe I at least cook them a steak while the truck loaded with the 'Q

I became tired of the "stainless" steel grills rusting and falling apart. I bought a cheap ($89) Home Depot special which is made of cast aluminum. Yes, after 2 years I had to replace the burner and grates, for $60. I don't bother with an igniter, I use a $2 long nose butane lighter.

I prefer using my Ceramic kamado grill, but the gas grill is great for a quick steak or hamburger.

Bill Douglas 11-11-2019 06:34 PM

Well, here's a good advertisement for Weber. I'd had (quite) a few drinks last night when I cooked some steaks on the Weber, then forgot to turn it off. This morning when I came out I thought I'd put the cover on it WTF  It was sitting perfectly at 400 AND gas still in the cylinder after being left on for 12 hours.

Not sure about OP’s neighborhood but anywhere I’ve lived, when I’ve put an old crap $70 grill way past it’s prime out by the curb It was gone in less than an hour. People seem to like grabbing them for free and refurbishing them to use. Sounds like OP’s would probably make someone very happy to get for free

If it’s a money thing then I would return it and get something better. I stick with Weber products. Parts do need replacing every few years but overall they are very durable

Rick Lee 11-12-2019 05:50 AM

I recently upgraded grills. I got the old one about 12 years ago and its gas igniter switch died within a year. I just used manual lighters thereafter. But eventually it got to looking so worn and haggard, it was time to toss it. It wasn't like it was some well-built piece from a bygone era, meant to last forever and worthy of refurbishment.

wdfifteen 11-12-2019 06:33 AM

This reminded me of an old, old thread.
