Was Don Cherry fired?????
 

I've been sick for a few days and heard this morning that Don Cherry was fired, is this true?

SportsNet posted on Twitter that he was gone effective immediately.

Well that sucks.....political correctness strikes again, but then again, he must be in his '80's...and it probably was time to go.

For those who don't know, this is about an event called Remembrance Day.

They wear poppies to remember the fallen.

Looks like Don is done. At 85 years old, he had a great career in broadcasting and in hockey.

There was one thing that hasn't really been mentioned with the poppies.
I am not going to run a pin through a Gor Tex jacket so I wear my poppy in my shirt collar.
At a glance, it would appear that I don't support our veterans or pay tribute to our fallen servicemen and women.
Perhaps they should distribute stickers of poppies and the standard plastic/pin variety.

That was one cherry that should have been put in the bin years ago.

Hope he enjoys his retirement...at last.

Cherry was one of the best hockey commentators ever!

He hated the Detroit Red Wings, I have to assume at one time they slighted him, and being a small man he never forgave the organization.

Well, this frees him up to run for political office - I guess.

I thought he was entertaining, and of course dressed like a clown to prove it.

He was an icon and trendsetter for a long time , I liken him as the John Madden of hockey . Passionate/animated/knowledgeable about the sport . Good luck to him for the future .

Vegas has him at 2000 to 1 as an N.D.P.'er!!

He was fired for talking about "milk and honey" but not cheese or beer.

The best thing about "Coaches Corner" was that I could switch to "Chasing Classic Cars" for a few minutes, in between periods.

in my opinion he is a horse's *ss, and a loud mouth blow hole. Look at it this way
he's only played 1 (one) more NHL game than I did. Yet he pretends to know all there is to know about hockey. Good riddance!

I'd enjoy listening to him on occasion for nostalgia's sake but in reality the game has passed him by.

The league is more than just good ol Ontarya boys but Cherry is stuck in 1985.

Never cared for Madden much either. I never followed football closely, but when the offensive line open holes my wheelchair bound grandmother could gain 6-8 yards through and he praises the running back for "finding the hole" it drives me crazy.

I always loved Madden. I remember him walking the sidelines in Oakland. I would be freezing my ass off in a jacket, and he would be sweating like a whore in church, running around in a golf shirt.

Announcing is a difficult thing to do well.

I find that the more corporate script an announcer has to follow, the more I'd rather mute them. The changes in NASCAR, even with the same people announcing, are immense.

Cherry was an NHL shock jock. Fun to listen to but don't take him too seriously.
I did agree with his attitude concerning supporting and/or remembering those who made your country safe.

You coached in the NHL as well? Also, wasn't it a 6 team league back then? Why do you hope he doesn't own a Porsche?

He certainly chose his words poorly, but the underlying message is true. He just wants to see more people publicly displaying their support to those that sacrificed to allow us the freedoms we enjoy today, including free speech. Doesn't mean he is right, but it's just his opinion. Which is the sole thing he was employed to display.

Is he bombastic and outspoken? Of course, why do you think he was being paid to do what he was doing?

Also, remember, because of the multiple games being shown on the network each Saturday, Coaches Corner is taped. Yes, correct, the weak kneed Sportsnet network views it ahead of time and deems it ok for broadcast. But then when the butt hurt society we have become cries foul, they fire him... Ya, ok....

Not saying he should be doing what he is doing. But SN kept him there because his outspoken nature generated ratings. And then they OK'd his spot and chose to broadcast it. Then they throw him under the bus, even though they OK'd the segment and sent it out for broadcast in many markets.

You just need to take the old fart with a grain of salt.

Look at the changes SN has made. Salary dumps everywhere. They were looking for an excuse to save money, he was rumored to be done last summer.

Idiot that he is, he made it easy for SN to fire him.

My understanding is that CC is recorded at the end of the first period of whichever game finishes first, then rebroadcasted to TO or MTL next. All with a 30 second delay. It is not recorded hours prior.

Good riddance, the game passed him by ten years ago. He's a journeyman blowhard that should have won two Stanley Cups, but won zero.
